BYOB dinner at NEO in Houston. I was a guest of some deep cellars and along for the ride. It's a night that I will not soon forget. One of the more powerful Red Burgundy expressions I can recall. Blind I would have never guessed 34 years of age. 96+

Quite funky on the nose initially, with some metallic notes. A few hours later with some air, it is absolutely singing. Lovely ripeness and purity on the nose, amazing mouthfeel, weight and balance with a core of fresh acidity. Monumental wine.

Holiday Burgundy Lunch (Scottsdale, AZ) : Served blind, I guessed '90 Leroy though I wasn't sure about the vineyard. This has tremendous class and regal bearing, as one would expect. What was especially noteworthy about this wine was the carrythrough from start to finish -- aroma, attack, midpalate, and finish were seamless. So harmonious, with classic Leroy aromatics, this is both delicious and intellectual. Enjoy now, but no rush this has many years ahead of it.

Less than perfect nose, better palate with rich red fruit and good acid spine. 92-93

NM DRC v L RSV R dinner. Smells like a savory old Burgundy and slight smokiness carried. Much better bottle earlier this year. (48/2044)

99W/91R. Single blind with 91 DRC RSV. Truly great, 3/3 against DRC. Crystalline, deep purple color. Super stemmy, sweet nose. Real presence across dark cherry palate. Powerful wine. Evolved into great nail polish nose. (1717/2044)

Favre 3.0 Friday Night. : Lush and sexy, but not as structured as expected. And drinking any 91 Leroy is a pleasure.

We drank the 91 DRC RSV and 1991 Leroy RSV side by side. The Leroy was the clear winner, but these are both smoking bottles from what for me is an outstanding burgundy vintage. Either of these would be in WOTN category for most dinners. A nice treat to enjoy them together.

Friday after Thanksgiving II (Palm Beach Gardens, FL) : Characteristic Leroy RSV, but a bit overdone and top heavy. Lacking in grace.

Friday after Thanksgiving (FAT) (Palm Beach Gardens FL) : Tasting, brief note. Very classically Leroy as well as RSV in its perfume and spice profile, perhaps borderline extreme. Not sure how this will evolve, but I found it very easy to enjoy tonight.

Popped, poured, and drank over about 45 minutes. Some nice fruit and spice right upon opening. Crushed red and black berry fruit with notes of clove and anise and moderate earthy tones. After 15 minutes or so, the earthy elements began to take over and the fruit started to dry out and fade. The pretty spice notes stayed around though.

This bottle took a very long time to show is stuff. However, it did come around and the nose alone took me away! 91 burgs when they hit are special and this was no exception. The nose had a deep tarnished leather and load black cherry aroma to it, Leroy spice was very subtle. At the end, the wine had considerable length. Still has plenty of life.

Very dark in color. Tight. I expected this to be showing much more fruit. Needs more time.

Stunning nose and entry that was so glossy and seductive. Incredibly tense and young still on the palate with a melange of red and black fruits and some pomegranate again. Beautiful.

Deep ruby with the barest hint of lightening at the rim. Gorgeous nose of deep, ripe pinot fruit, earth, spice, and a touch of sous bois. In the mouth it has great concentration. Wonderful balance between the tannins, fruit, and bright acidity. Palate dominated by ripe, spicy fruit and earth. Long long finish. Absolutely gorgeous.
