Domaine Robert Arnoux / Arnoux-Lachaux Romanée St. Vivant

Dark in color but with a distinctly tawny rim. Very aromatic, showcasing red currents, basmati rice, crushed mint leaves, lilac. On the palate the fruit is still very fresh and the wine seems quite young, soft tannic structure, medium length palate. Excellent, delicious now and mature, but might last (and could even gain complexity) for decades, if you keep it in good storage conditions.

No detailed notes. At first a bit simple and muted but with time more open displaying sweet cherry fruit, a bit of minerality, and a bit of sous bois/stems. Not the most complex wine but with a beautiful structural frame. Overall, a complete and seductive wine.

Double-decanted. Cool red berry fruit with darker elements of plum. Distinctly meaty with char coal minerality. Fresh grassy herbs. Amazing presence, floating atop a bed of mushrooms. Adding more flowery dimensions and smoke. The fruit is also gaining in sweetness and depth with aeration. A light, yet postured palate with linear acidity and structure and incredibly elegant with a wonderful red berry fruit.

goodness, what a wine!!! long, complex, young and (incredibly) still tannic. Crammed full of amazingly beautiful fruit, ensuring perfect balance when the tannins finally melt. This should be extraordinary in another decade or two. 98++

Tasted out of a MAG. Very deep intellectual wine. Each sip presenting new spices and a kaleidoscope of fruit. Endless length nearly flawless. Will get better hold. 98+

Mini vertical of 95,96,00,04. This is the wine of the night. Very expressive with vr spice, herbs and sweet red currant. A feminine expression of rsv. I would not say this is a wow rsv, but it is very classic. Drinking well now with 1 point upside from aging.

Pre La Paulée Zachy's BYO Dinner (Sessions at The Presidio - SF, CA) : Fairly disappointing and relatively weak relative to the 53/66/90/91/93/01 tasted at the same dinner. It lacks the intensity and power of those stronger vintages. Good, but not a great example of this vineyard from Arnoux.

Zachys La Paulée "Warm-up" Dinner (Sessions at the Presidio - San Francisco CA) : In multi-flight 53/66/90/91/93/95/01 vertical. Very rugged with good enough fruit. Tough to predict how/ where/ when this will evolve into an exciting Romanée St. Vivant. I'd hold in the cellar for at least another decade if I owned any.

Tasted blind, this wine had red/purple center with tawny rims. the medium+ intensity nose displayed black cherries, vitamins, plums, soil, and a hint of iodine. In the mouth, this wine tasted a bit reduced and intense. It was young, fruity, and showed rounded tannin and very good length. Opened with some bottle stink, but that blew off over time in the glass. Palate is rich, deep and gorgeous. While the wine has substantial weight, it is also elegant and detailed on the palate. This is one case where the '95 vintage did not harden the wine unduly. Still young with ample red and black pinot fruit. Another 10 years in the cellar for my next bottle makes sense.

Charleston III - the Weekend; 9/18/2014-9/20/2014 (Charleston SC - various locations incl. Red Drum, Halls, Circa 1886, and Kings Courtyard Inn) : Opened and decanted for a few hours before drinking. This was paired alongside a 1993 Clos de la Roche and both wines just felt like babies. I get the stewed fruit that I often taste in Burgundies. There wasn't much complexity here. It just seemed tight and closed up. The CT drinking window (2007) is well underestimated.

This wine showed a medium red center with light red rims. The nose was ripe and young and mostly focused on red fruits, cola, soil, and mocha. The mouth was medium bodied and plummy with rounded tannin and good length. While this bottle was clearly a bit too young to drink, the rounded tannin and excellent acidity made it quite enjoyable. Attractive deep crimson in color. Mushrooms and funk on the nose with a hint of sweetness. Ripe cherries, rasberries on the palate with nice fruit given the age of the wine. Long tapered finish. Immensely enjoyable wine and a fine example of a classic burgundy.

Perfectly mature right now and really a textbook example of a fine burgundy. The floral nose and the cherry, earth and mushroom flavors noted by others were all present and made a brilliant complement to a creamy pasta with wild mushrooms. I could drink this every night (if only I had some more).

Dinner at 112 Eatery (Boillot, Arnoux, Jadot, Ducru, Lynch, Mondavi, Girardin) : Deep red color with a slight hue of rust. gant and feminine on the nose. When first poured it was dominated by red fruit, beef blood, blood orange, mushroom, and a hint of violets. Tasting Group Dinner (112 Eatery, Minneapolis) : Medium maroon color. Gorgeous nose of violets and high-toned red fruit. The palate shows red cherries, minerals, tea, cola, and a hint of black truffle. There are some earth/forest floor secondary flavors here, but overall the flavor profile is driven by fresh red fruit and minerals. Medium weight; lacy and elegant mouthfeel. Tasted a little more mature than a 1995, but still fresh and alive.

Great nose, beautiful drink. Loved it. It was decanted for 30 minutes, and after about an hour it seemed to lose some of its charm. Don't decant next bottles for too long.

This is really a lovely wine. Mitch said "now that's burgundy" after his first taste. I agree. The fruit is forward, the wine is balanced. Nice. Will continue to improve, but no need to defer.
