Copper color. Burnt sugar and citrus zest nose. A hint of varnish. Bual-like. Very acidic on the palate. Puckering. The attack is quite fine. A bit aggressive on the back end. Serious quality for Tinta Negra. I think I would enjoy this more with a nice cream soup. (91)

Opened for Portugal-France Euro 2021. Draw on the field and not a fair fight in the wine department, but Portugal definitely won this one. This is a really interesting wine. I can see how others were confused or put off by it, but I loved it. Seaweed and burnt sugar from the previous note are good descriptors. Even better than my first taste from April. The nose is seaweed and burnt sugar. Flavors of peach and coffee. A great, long, salty, citrus finish.

Intense aroma of peach juice. Salted caramel, dried apricot, pineapple, iodine. Lengthy high acid finish.

Not a wine easy to understand, alcoholic, very modest sweetness, good acidity. Quality here, but I do not know what to think about this wine.

Monthly Tuesday group "The Dead Sparrow" #014: Madeira (@ RW and by RW) : Caramel, burnt sugar, citrus, nuts and some resin in the bouquet. On the palate currants, sweetness, good acidity, sugared tangerine, dried fruits, some coconut and citrus. Clean and an enormous length.

A birthday dinner (Restaurant Bord'eau **, Amsterdam, NL) : Intense and salty, styled like a rich Verdelho, richly fruited, hint of caramel, tangy acidity but not austere, spices, lovely length.

Madeira Wine Institute Tasting (Washington, DC) : Deep copper color. Rich nose of dried pineapples and mangos, fig paste, spiced tea, almond and peanut oils, dense dried flowers, just a whole range of complex aromas that bounce out of the glass. More citrusy on the palate, like tangerine and orange peels, this seems moderately sweet but is refreshingly bright. I get flavors of baked apple, cinnamon and ginger chews with a long, warm finish. Beautiful stuff.
