Ruby red, clear edge. Blackberry, cherry, mushroom, soy and undergrowth nose. Blackberry, plum, pencil shavings, tobacco, undergrowth taste. Vibrant fruit, mellow and mature tannins, lovely balance and long aftertaste.

P&P a 375 tonight because I needed more Burgundy after dinner. Needs time in the glass while the Volnay character slinks in. Violet and a hint of spice on the nose. Acidity is forward, tannins seem resolved, fruit lurking behind. Probably at peak but give it some air before diving in.

La Paulée de Los Angeles - The Verticals (Maybourne Hotel - Beverly Hills CA) : Vertical. Firm but the wine's elegance easily shows. Red and black cherry with good+ density. This will be the best of the vertical, but not yet today, 90-91 point potential.

High score but it was terrific good. Dark color with sweet fruit. Yet mineral and filled the mouth with a lovely spice. One of my first Volnay and sure hard to beat…I am impressed.

Lively bright medium translucent ruby; nose clean, pure and ready with floral, menthol, and chlorophyll notes dominating; silky but sneakily potent tannins and ample acidity keep aromas alive in focus on the palate; a bit of bitter anise at closing. Quite primary now; its sister in the cellar will wait for 5-10 before cork is pulled. Assuming this represents house style will wait on others in mixed case as well.

Color is ruby trailing off to rose at the edges of the glass. Warm, herbal and leafy on the nose. Right out of the bottle, acidic and tannic but after an hour or so in the decanter it mellows into savory cherry with a twist of lemon.

Volnay with Jasper Morris MW (67 Pall Mall) : Very 2015, with its deep colour and sweet fruit. A touch of Brett gives complexity rather than being off-putting. Tangy and spicy, with notes of Chinese tea.

Domaine Clos de la Chapelle Dinner (Cafe Boulud - New York NY) : In 17/16/15/10 vertical. Lots here, but this clearly requires patience. Ripe and powerful with a brooding, nearly sullen character. Tough to assess, but I am optimistic, even if I doubt this will ever equal the 2016.

American Volnay for the 4th. Very fresh floral and dark berry fruit. Expressive sweet perfume. Much more open than expected. Long, pure, easy to like.

Kevin Zrlay Red Burg : 91/92. Lost my full tasting note on 2015-16s The 2015 was high toned red fruited and vanilla oaked wine with gentle grip and more balance than other wines I tasted today. Good, but not particularly distinctive. But a hybrid wine for wife and I could like giving her the red fruit without too much. The 2016 had a nose that needed air but ultimately was awesome red and black cherry, barnyard and funk. On the …
