Chateau Gazin, Pomerol

This was always a great favourite of mine in its earlier years with a wonderful Pomerol sumptuousness. However, during the last couple of years, as it lost its fruit, it became quite angular, and I was questioning it's potential longevity. The last 12 months have been game changing with the wine becoming fully tertiary. Firm tannins, spicy plum and black fruit, cedar and cigar box on the nose, this is in great place right now. I think the cellar tracker window is a bit pessimistic - I'm not sure there's much improvement to be had from here but it's not about to fall off a cliff.

Opened 2hrs on forehand, no decant. Great precision and refinement. Very finely grated tannines structure. beautiful perfume of forest floor, cedar, red fruits, smoke and all with great attention to detail. This bottle showed young but so delicious and i wish i had (a lot) more.

Mature and a bit rustic and earthy in the bouquet. Same on the palate, complex, herbs, chocolate, tobacco, olives, bacon, spices, graphite, good acidity and powdery tannin. At its peak now.

Dark and red berries, sweet spices, herbs, graphite, cedar, juicy medium+ acidity, chocolate and coffee, plums, dark olives, ok acidity. More developed than expected.

2009 vintage

Aromas of black fruit, violets and cedary oak. There is ripe and pure fruit on the balanced palate of this enjoyable wine that is in the drinking window.

Perfect cork. Very similar to previous bottle, with cassis, black cherry, plum, black cherries, cigar box, and leathery earthiness. Good acidity and powdery tannins frame the medium bodied Pomerol very nicely. Decent length.

Perfect cork. Double decanted and drunk over a couple of days. Singing from the outset. Garnet, not too dark in the glass, with some bricking at the rim. Flavour profile consists of cassis, dark cherry, plum, high quality milk chocolate, liquorice, and some nicely developed tertiary notes of cigar box and leather. Still very youthful - blueberry and blackcurrant aromas, plus some Victoria plum, much the same in the mouth, very sensual and fleshy, a little richer than I would have liked but there's a wave of crisp acidity midpalate that saves it from anything syrupy. It's a fine wine, no question at all, and I can see it being better when it calms down a little more.

Lovely Pomerol, fully mature, cedary notes and still some plummy fruit, but just a hint of harshness on the finish from the tannin, although the harshness softens after a couple of hours in the decanter. I'm thinking this should be drunk soon, in case the fruit fades faster than than the tannin.

A lovely wine, well rounded and smooth. Deep notes of cherry and plum on the nose. More cherry, oak and iron on the palate. Decanted 2 hours before, blossomed wonderfully. Rather much sediment, but that was to be expected.

An easy afternoon with close friends (@ FD) : Expressive and complex bouquet, creamy and luxurious with well dosed oak. On the palate juicy dark berries, creamy again, some pepper, chocolate and fresh acidity and round tannin with still a lovely bite.

Near perfection in a bottle. Did a BIG lunch at le Crocodile, and I brought this bottle along. Classic BDX all the way through. Just delicious. I have two more left, which I will drink over the coming 12 months. I'm writing this the next day, so detailed notes are forgotten.

Last bottle. Nice balance, tasty. Dried berry fruit ... cherries, cassis. Dusty smooth ripe tannins. Some bitterness. Balsamic and caramel on finish. Been consistent through my 3 bottles. Nice easy complexity ... medium tannins, medium acidity, medium fruit.

This is my favourite vintage from the estate, but I am conflicted over it's potential longevity. It was very approachable in it's earlier maturity, but as it loses its initial fruit, more tannic notes are exposed. Very dark red color. Poured into decanter and drank over 3 hours. Green tobacco leaf, spearmint, dry wood funk, brooding dark fruits on the nose. The palate shows dried tobacco, cigar, tart black currants, gravel, leather, earth, grainy tannins and some dark berry notes. Very good, got better over the evening.

Dense, tannic, and modern. Opulent fruit, and a nose that references balsamic vinegar, mushrooms, green olives, cedar, and plums. Currently in a monolithic stage of development. Impressive for its power and very firm structure. This is absolutely built for the long hall, although my impression is that it will always remain tannic. Typical Pomerol notes on offer, in a particularly stern and strict package (I'm partly blaming the vintage). Dark fruit and truffle, and plenty of graphite. Deep colour, beautiful savoury nose and a touch of leather, the palate has dark ripe berry fruit and still plenty of structure from classic tannins that give the palate a lovely shape. Another only okay showing for this wine that I had high hopes for. Is it fully matured? It appears very dry and seems to be losing the fruit component, with concentration appearing to recede. Still lovely.

Drinking superbly, it is my favourite Gazin vintage and it kicks a lot of more prestige right bank estates into touch. Taste profile is as per previous notes. Do give it an hour or two in the decanter to come alive.

After a 2 hour decant, the nose is forest floor and some minerality is present. The palate is complex with dark red fruit, coffee, acerola cherry, hint of tobacco, and lots of acidity to go to dinner. Truly one of the best Bordeaux I have tasted in this vintage of 2009. You can lay it down longer or drink it now with decanting.

Delicious. Dark with lots of mineral, iron, blood. Also bright herbal...eucalyptus, menthol. Really solid fruit, very compact, muscular. This is in a great place right now and should be drinking well for a while longer. Plateau now - 2028 easy. Really good stuff.

Big and sexy... but not ready yet. Still fresh, massive black and blue fruits, but a surprising amount of tannin 14 years on. Decanted for 2-3 hours. Would likely have been better on day two, but it didn't last that long. Still... Ill wait a couple years before I pop the next bottle.

While the colour is still dark with only some brightening but no browning at the rim and the nose starts with a blast of burnt oak and vanilla it nonetheless only took about one hour in the decanter to bring the wine up to full speed. Académie des Cinquante Tasting and Dinner with the Académie du Vin de Bordeaux (Restaurant Entrepot, Amsterdam, NL) : Magnum. A superb vintage for Gazin, very alluring in an understated fashion. At perfect peak in this larger format.

Just wonderful. Touch of leather but full of fruit and nice long finish.

2009 vintage

Blueberry, plum and tobacco leaf aromas, then a fleshy mouthful of cassis and blueberry, with velvety plum much more prominent than two years ago. Quite rich, but with a fresh middle section that lifts it above Nenin 05 tasted alongside. Good grip, but the tannins are smoother and better integrated than before, this is a seriously good wine.

Disregard my last tasting note - probably an of bottle. This feels very young, but it is drinking very nicely. No rush to enjoy hereto and yes, this is lovely!
