This is a structured, intense and high acid wine. With air, the aged flavors of Nebbiolo kick in with dark red fruits and lovely notes of balsamic, forest floor, tar and roses. Got better and better in the glass even after a 6-hour double-decant. More time needed based on this bottle. 94+

A February Evening at Greg's Place : [Tasted Double Blind] This pours light garnet in the glass. The nose is fairly muted on opening only grudgingly revealing a woodsy, twiggy, sinewy character with light cherry, rose petal, and forest floor reluctantly showing themselves. Jerry & Darren's Celebration (Draper's Arms, N1) : Glorious red fruit, cherry and dark raspberry. Storms out of the glass, incredibly smooth and inviting. Refined and graceful, there is still tannic bite here. Balanced. My tiny sip was equisite.

Heidi's Gang of Six (St. Genevieve, Mpls, MN) : Dark red color. Decanted for about 4 hours with extra slow- O time. Followed a glass over an hour. Lacquer, sappy cherry and raspberry, licorice, woody. Started out intriguing and then seemed like the palate was clipped and something wasn't quite right. Score reserved.

Strong and beautiful wine. Classically proportioned. Proper Barolo for aging...and doing so while maintaining grace and power. Many years to go yet. Excellent, and a standout at a Paulee of Piedmont wines!

Love the aromatics here - it starts out more red fruited and floral, but turns darker and deeper with more black fruit emerging with air, along with savoury earthy and tarry, and a faintly bitter/high-toned herbal element that reminds me of some amaro. A powerhouse on the palate - it's a big wine but conveys power with a sense of restraint, with bright acids and a spine of tannin adding structure beneath the rich fruit. Superb wine.

Burgundy and Barolo (Châteauneuf-du-Salil, Albany) : [Double-decanted for 3 hours at 3pm. Started tasting around 7pm.] Muted black fruit nose. Big and tannic. Opening slowly in the glass. Lots and black and red fruit balance the tannins which are starting to soften. Powerful, yet elegant. Long finish of black fruit and licorice with something floral. Superb! Wait 10 more years or give it a long decant. It was still opening up at 9:30.

Monprivato Vertical: 04-12 (Cru and Domaine, Portland OR) : Where the bottle I had 2 years ago was ornery and didn't want to play, this was full steam ahead in all of the great ways! The nose is deep and succulent with perfumed tones of violets, red cherries, strawberries, raspberries, fresh picked red berries, herbal spices, rose petals, tar, morning dew, crushed rocks, and sweet tobacco leaf notes. Monprivato and Friends (Noize) : Really good. The most classical of the flight, with some interesting incense and Vetiver notes that gave the nose a suave character. A nice mixture of attributes made up the palate: fresh red fruit, bitter dark meat, peppery spice, an attractive and refreshing degree of acidity. Still actually fairly tannic, but the tannins were clean and powdery and, whilst cheek-coating, added to my enjoyment. Joint group WOTN - and clearly mine.

One of the stronger "normale" vintages here, but I having tasted 78/96/99/00/01/06/07/08/10/11/12 and CdM 96/06/08/10 alongside each other, I would argue there are no truly great Monprivato bottlings.

This is a much better 750ml bottle than my last even though from the same case. Cleaner and more vibrant although still with a gorgeous lithe texture and very pure and lifted dark cherry fruit. Lovely notes of tar, roses and minerals show up on the finish which builds to a great taut and succulent complexity. Unlike the last magnum which was killer, this bottle needs more time to integrate and the last sip was incredible! 95+

Piedmont night : Coincidentally we had two bottles of this. The one that was opened since the morning was glorious; silky and sensual red fruit with a tannic bite that led me to consistently guess all the G. Mascarellos as Bartolo on the night. Unfortunately the one that was popped and poured was all tannins and not very giving.

Brought this to a wine mate's place for a wine session over BBQ. Theme of the evening: Barolos from a pre-determined list from the 04/06/08/10 vintages. Decanted for 2.5 hours before consumption. Brick-red in colour, with notes of spices (cinnamon, pepper, cloves), cut flowers, cherries, black tea, iron, and rust, on the nose. On the palate the wine is smooth and elegant, with a slow evolution into a multi-dimensional finish. Time slowed down quite substantially when tasting this wine. Sensational!

Rating for two bottles of this at the same sitting from two different source, 1 decanted for 2 hours, other just popped and poured. The one decanted was gloriously lifted, pretty but still carrying great structure for long term aging. The one popped and poured was tight. Average score at 94. Decanted one at 95

Pausing for the Cause Fundraiser and Dinner (Oriole - Chicago IL) : Small glass, brief note. This had just been decanted. Teasing us with floral and spiced red cherry aromas, but firm tannins are just so dominant on the palate for now that it was impossible to appreciate. Needs so much more time.

From Coravin, first time using it for a quick sip, nice herbal and dried flowers nose, with both a bit of evolution and a strict still there smell, fruits are getting back with a bit air, plumy, but not ripe, palate is vibrant with tangy and soft tannins, great wine, refinement and lovable.

Nose shows red cherries, red flowers and leather, with spices and licorice, some medicinal herbs present. Tight on the palate, medium coarse tannins, red cherries and sour red berries, leather, tar, licorice and herbs. Quite acidic and densely structured, and rather tightly knitted at this point. This needs more time (as so many 2006 Barolos I have had). (90 – 93?)

Mascarello Barolo Villero 2006 vs Parusso Mosconi 2006: - Farbe: Der Parusso ist deutlich konzentrierter. Wie erwartet, da er 24 Mo im Barrique ausgebaut wurde - Der Mascarello ist ein burgundischer Barolo. Schöne Säure, für meinen Geschmack etwas zu wenig Tannin Struktur. Tasting at the Vinforening with Mr Guiseppe Mascarello and Sebastian Bredal. A superb Barolo, bright garnet red, hardly no rim. Perfumed, with cherries and red fruit, wild roses and violets. Palate displays cherry, raspberry and red currant, roses and some violets. With air hints of tar and licorice displays and tease those that can wait. Long, very structured and an overall very elegant wine.

Italy 2012 - Piemonte; 7/8/2012-7/14/2012 (La Morra) : Tasted at the winery. Brilliant nose that’s elegant, floral and perfumey with sweet red fruits. On the palate this offers great acidity, fine but firm tannins and a long dry finish. This is quite feminine for a classically structured Barolo. Should age and develop for 10-15+ years. Excellent. 92+
