Mount Pleasant (McWilliams), Rosehill Shiraz, Hunter Valley

{screwcap, 14%} Maturing garnet, still a dark grant hue. Attractive developing nose of earth, tobacco, spicy black fruit, hint of cola and soy. Medium-weight palate, packed with flavour, soft oak, maturing, with some earthy, leathery characters over the stewed black fruit. Never tastes hot or raisiny though. Medium acidity, low/medium dusty tannins, medium/long finish. A savoury, authentic style, in excellent condition, and still with maturity to come I reckon. Should drink well for another ten years easily.

Classic old school Hunter shiraz. Grease paint added acid on the nose. A bit weightier, less elegant than modern wines. Intense core of fruit sweetness. 14%, screwcap.

Museum release under Stelvin so beautiful youthful condition. Deep plummy scarlet in colour, with purple tints. So young! Blackberry, olive tapenade, camphor, white pepper and spice. It’s delicious. Long finish, with some earthy character but no Brett, terroir. Long spicey finish, the finish is where the Rosehill character asserts itself. Gorgeous wine, but I prefer OP&OH, 18. Amazed at the development of this wine. Last time I tried one of these (2018) the acid was so prominent that, even after being open for 24 hours, l tipped most of it down the sink. It’s now a pretty reasonable drop and my dinner companions were certainly appreciative of it last night.

NobleRottersSydney - <>A$40 blind (Fix, St James, Sydney) : {screwcap, 14%} [Greg] Blind note. Richly developed red. Stewed sort of blackberry flavour, although for some reason I thought it might be cabernet. Ripe and seductive medium/full-bodied palate. Medium powdery tannins, medium/high acidity. Still with plenty more development to come. Evenly balanced palate, medium/long finish. Normally around A$50 on release these days. Most impressive Rosehill I can recall for years. Not quite classic Hunter in style perhaps, but very good anyway.

Last bottle. Changed a lot over 2 hours. Have kept half for tomorrow. Now quite sappy, autumnal, and very easy to drink. The added acid ebbs and flows with air, finding its balance. Very good. Agree with ProfBryan. Heaps of acid. Overwhelming hints of traditional Aussie Shiraz. After an hour or so it calmed down / subtle tannins - marginal leather notes (maybe more hope than fact). Will aerate and breathe next one for at least 2 hours. Not convinced but better a food wine than drinking wine at this point.

Pop and pour and I’m not agreeing with screwcaps (below). Acid is prominent, a touch of noticeable oak, and certainly tannin. There’s some nice flavour here but it’s struggling when the acid on the finish sweeps it away. A food wine at present. Let me see after some breathing....hmm, softens, becomes more noticeably traditional Ozzie shiraz... distinctive greasepaint smell of added acid. 14%, screwcap.

The spread of leather and earth through the finish is impressive. Mineral tannins still abound. Quite drying. Oak largely resolved, save for a touch of char through the finish. Red and black cherry. Length is good. I get the feeling it could go either way from here- it’s slightly drying out but still a fair bit of vital fruit, clay like tannin and freshness. But alcohol is rising through the finish. Will keep my remaining bottle for 3 more years …

Drunk over 2 nights. It improved on the 2nd night. Cherry, tobacco and plum on the nose. Palette of dark cherry, plum, mint and chocolate but tannins are slightly greenish. May still need a few years to reach it's peak.

Consumed over two nights. Still youthful in colour and bouquet. A delight on the palate, more red berry (cherry) than plum, light spice, a dash of vanilla, soft tannins and light acid. Great across the palate and nice length. Delicious drinking now and would likely have cellared much longer. One of the better Hunter Valley Reds. 92+

Quick double decant. No sediment to speak of. Nice purple hue. Plummy and red berries. Hint of oak, though not overbearing. I found this full-boded, though nothing like a SA shiraz. With the right cellaring conditions, this should develop nicely. A nice drop.

Pound for pound a great wine from Mt Pleasant for the value. A medium to full bodied wine with a bright rich burgundy appearance. The bouquet is light with black fruits and a smoky charred oak. Flavours of blackberries, tobacco and liquorice hold well. The finish is medium but will get better with age. Best drinking to 2020. Hunter Valley Visit 2013; 4/26/2013-4/29/2013 (Hunter Valley, Australia) : Charred oak, raspberry and earth. Palate is medium bodied but with some good savoury intensity. Textured and well balanced. Drink now and over the medium term. I slightly preferred the 2010 but this was very good.

Hunter Wineries (1) - Mt PLeasant & McDonald Rd : {screwcap, 14%, A$40} Youthful soft red berries and spice. Low oak, fine medium-grain tannins. Lovely balance along the tongue; smoky, earthy cherry-laced fruits show a savoury side before culminating in a medium-long dry finish. Very good in all respects, especially if you buy it for two-thirds the cellar door price in Sydney’s bigger chain stores.

Nose of prunes and matchsticks. Mouth of honeycomb, Ditto fluid, violets. Medium length finish of olives and vegetable soup.

Inviting aromas of cherries, blackcurrant, nutmeg and clove. The robust palate is filled with rich dark fruits and berries, chocolate, pepper and cedar oak. Definitely full bodied, not overly “huntery” and a touch warm on the finish.
