Fifth of nine purchased at auction with a fill into the neck. The cork was soaked only a couple millimeters. Very good color. This took about twenty minutes in the glass to find its feet and continued to get better and better for the duration of the evening. On the first night, it certainly stepped right up to the edge of the precipice of overripeness and put a few toes out over the abyss. The nose was full of red …

Leather, blackberry, licorice, vanilla. Medium finish. Medium body. Still some acidity and tannins here so conceivably has several years ahead of it. I wonder how it will be showing in 2029. I forgot my second glass on my nightstand for about 2 hours and when I came back this wine was divine.

The tannins are quite coarse and bold on the first day. Melds nicely after that, the fruit is chiseled and tight, the finish lingers in a deceptive kind of way. Huge grip on the palate. Mineral and gravelly notes show fine terroir.

Leather, smokey, damp oak nose initially on opening. Develops into caramelization, burnt popcorn, parsley, cut grass. Finally, rich leather, hint of dark berries, old books. Solid structure and presentation but what a wine to have had 30 years ago, they don’t make them like this anymore, gives vague recollections of a world before temperature rise. Light to medium body, no bricking (?!?), light purplish garnet. Tannic, astringent initially rapidly softens to strawberry jam, but fading fast. Drank with chili con …

Second of nine purchased at auction, with a fill into the neck and a cork soaked only on the end. Coravin pour. This was much, much better than my first bottle from this lot, which wasn’t terrible but was showing a fair amount of overripe fig notes. With this bottle, the fig and tar notes were much fainter on both the nose and the palate. It was showing a very good concentration of black fruits, excellent acidity, and lots of …

First of nine purchased at auction, with a fill into the neck and a cork soaked only on the end. This bottle was perfect immediately upon opening but very quickly began showing light signs of overripeness—not much by the standards of the vintage, but it was there. I’ve had some classed growths from ‘03 that were truly abysmal overripe messes that had to go down the drain; this was not like those. Clearly, as reported by others, Potensac did a …

This was a very pleasant surprise. While showing the overt ripeness of the vintage this was balanced. On the nose it was all about ripe fruit - plums, currants, and berries. On the palate there was ample fruit, ripe tannins, and hints of tobacco, cedar, tar, and leather. I would have preferred more acidity to hold the alcohol and fruit together.

A pleasure to drink now. Perfectly integrated tannins, plums, blackberries. Not the most complex wine but really good at the moment! Where will it go over the next decade? 92-93

Better an hour or so after popping. A murky nose - nothing lifting it. Musky dark berries, and a surprisingly rich body, chalky yes, but almost to the point of having a fruit pulp residue, such was the impression of high dry extract to my palate. Not unpleasant mind. A little tobacco and oak, but also a little heat. although I was drinking it at room temperature on a warm night. Good.

JP victory lap. From magnum. Deep ruby purple color; full bodied. Blackberry, plum, cured meats, dirt, maybe a hint of leather. Beautifully integrated tannins, and surprisingly still fresh (given the hot year.) This wined edged out a 2003 Cos we also opened, which is going some!

Potensac is owned by the same owner as Leoville Las Cases. I found this to be better right after popping the cork and with less air. Nice mulberry, black current, and fig fruit flavors with hints of hints of tobacco and licorice and a touch of menthol. All the reviews mention minerals, but I get more of a dusty/chalky sensation than what I would typically think of as minerals. Isbjoern on CT says “meaty” and I can definitely see that—almost …

Clearly, this is the best vintage of Potensac I have ever tasted, and it is easy to see why. The aromatic profile is loaded with tobacco leaf, cedar, herbs, and black fruits. Concentrated with ripe, deep black fruits that provide length, lift and volume, this is going to age for more than 2 decades, if fans can keep their hands off. The wine was produced from blending 43% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36.5% Merlot, 19.5% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot.14.52% ABV. …

Continues to be one of the best values of the 2009 Bordeaux vintage in my cellar. Classy aged Médoc! Plum and blackberry fruit, some forest floor and animal funk, a bit meaty, tar and cigar smoke from the barrel, licorice and herbs, an almost calcerous minerality, integrated but present tannins. At peak now. - 90 points

Pop and Pour. Most classic left bank nose i've smelled today. A good amount of new oak sticking out, black fruit, black licorice, scorched earth and estuary. Palate is subtle and builds in intensity, sweet yet restrained black berry and cassis. Love the texture of this. Loads of chalky gravel on the finish. Super classical style from a warm vintage. The finish just keeps going. This is really good.

Quite disappointing. It is not harmonic, cohesive, it does not have a good grip, it lacks concentration. I find there is something vulgar about it, though I can't say it is horrible. I used to think more of Potensac, and expected a lot better for this vintage. Maybe, it will improve over time, but it seems to me far from likely. Good for BBQs (I mean like sausages), can hardly say anything more positive than that.

Loads of juicy fruit, with nice freshness. I have been drinking this regularly over the past two years and have not noticed much development during that time. But I think it may well improve with further age so will hang on to my final case and revisit in a couple of years.

A strong performance following the 1986 La Mission Haut Brion in a two bottle Christmas dinner. The last bottle of a case purchased years ago. Cellar Tracker stats indicate I paid $20/bottle. A delightful surprise and I am happy I did not review my most recent tasting note from a decade ago. A deep sea red of darkness in the glass following decanting. Quite viscous with noticeable legs and staining. Much vivacity in the mouth with notes of blackberry and …

Top!

Last tasted 5 months ago, this has really exploded into life in the interim, and is a glorious wine that could go head to head with Cru wines. Without doubt, this is the best Potensac I've ever tasted, and great value for money. Everything is integrated with a silky mouthfeel, and just enough bite to give a perfect balance. The finish is also top notch and pushes 30 seconds. 92+

Bought years ago from Tesco, back when their wine range had some interest. Anyway the colour is still deep just reddening on the rim. At first fairly tannic, a violet note and dark fruit. An hour in, and after food, softer and fruit driven, just a hint of prunes. For a Medoc of 14 years old the quality and guts of this is fairly remarkable. ****, no hurry.

Double decanted 12 hrs prior. Deep ruby garnet color. Mushroom, earth, a little herb, hint of blackberry on the nose. Iodine, earth, touch of blackbery but minimal fruit at this point, with about 35-40 sec finish. I don’t know what’s going on with some of the negative reviews but it makes me wonder if some bottles were heat damaged? I would probably decant for less time, as there was a little more iodine this time than before. Still, reasonable QPR …

Following up on my tasting of a year ago, I fully endorse my sentiment from then. This is probably the best Potensac I've tasted, putting some growth wines to shame, and I am puzzled by some bizarre reviews slamming the wine. Admittedly, it does need lots of air at this stage to come alive, but even so ill informed comments aren't helpful for newer drinkers. This is the business and great value for money!
