Final of 2 bottles, I last tried this wine 3.5 yrs ago. Meaty and bloody on the nose, with black pepper, bacon grease, and wet concrete. Black and blue fruits, with well-structured tannins and ample acidity for this big-ish wine. Drinking at peak right now.

Book Club (Foretti's) : Blind: I was down Zinfandel path, but this one but the problem was the oak. I think it had more to do with the 2011 vintage because I’m sure there was a lot of engineering that went on in the background to make this work. it’s very nice but it comes across as a light style and a little red fruit. There’s a spicy note and what is showing as oak but probably stem? That was …

Bookclub (served blind)--My Turn (Foretti's in Corona Del Mar) : From my older Copain fight last night which I did blind for the group: 2010 Brosseau, 2007 Hawks Butte and 2011 Halcon. All of these wines were 'only one left' bottles, which have been in my cellar for quite some time as I wanted to find the right time to do them all blind. Picked last night to put them in front of the group. The Halcon was the least …

Tasted over 2 hrs -saturated dark red purple minimal clearing -like boysenberry bathing in kalamata olive juice -med/med+ acidity, med/med+ weight mostly earth with a smoky tangy dark berry lurking in the background, med tannins -still going strong and perhaps some further upside development, seems like it picked up some weight over time

1st of 2 bottles, purchased from winery upon release. Nose of wet concrete, potting soil, tar, olive paste, plum skin, and black currant fruit. The palate shows refinement and control for such a potentially bold wine. Flavors including black fruits, espresso grounds, smoke, bell pepper, savory sautéed mushrooms, and wet slate. Beautifully balanced acidity, quite a velvety mouthfeel with refined tannins and a finishing touting anise and black pepper. Drink now through 2025+.

Appearance: deep ruby, just starting to show a little bit of rim variation, very light staining, medium tearing, moderate amount of fine sediment. Nose: clean, developing, pronounced intensity, blackberry, black olive, red plum, violet, lavender, white pepper, black pepper, stemmy organic earth, rubber, black cardamom, bacon fat, smoked beef, worn leather. Palate: dry, medium+ acid (verging on high), medium+ tannin, medium alcohol (12.8%), medium+ body, pronounced intensity, long finish, blackberry, black olive, red plum, boysenberry, violet, lavender, white pepper, black …

Tasted blind. Dark fruit, olives, and savory notes on the pretty nose. Quite interesting on the palate with medium+ tannins, brine, and dark berry notes. Nice finish.

Dark, not quite opaque garnet, no real signs of age, nose is subtle, with lightly herbal notes, the palate is where this gets interesting: beautiful medium depth, a melange of darker fruits, some blackberry, boysenberry, raspberry; plenty of well integrated acidity, with some fine slightly grippy tannins; lovely herbal spice notes intertwine the fruit, providing nice interest in this elegant, intricately complex Syrah. Still very youthful, with years of life and development ahead. This has the chance to be a …

12.8% abv. Recent purchase from WineBid. On the pop n pour this was hard, acidic, thin, herbal, and weedy. My palate was not having it, so I vacuvin’d and left for the next evening. At this point it showed much better, though, still a rather unfriendly wine. This really reminded me of one of those young, stainless-raised, fresh reds that are becoming so popular these days. I appreciated the transparent winemaking going on here, as the the cool vintage is …

Nice wine, drinking well here. Lean fruit that leans to the red side. Probably wouldn’t buy again.

(From a bottle opened the night before): Dark garnet, mostly opaque, tasting a bit leaner than I remember from a year ago, with slightly tart blackberry/boysenberry fruit, moderate, somewhat chalky tannins, some slight green bell pepper and lots of white pepper notes; still very youthful, if I plan correctly I'll try one of these every third year for the next 15-20 - I think it will continue to get more interesting and beautiful with bottle age. Sitting with this into …

Opened and finished same day. Drinking pure, good depth of red fruit. In a good place now as the acid and fruit are both in synch. My final bottle.

I’m confused by this wine. It seemed simultaneously dumb and young. I think I will give my next bottle a year or so and will decant next time.

Green olive and mild pepper on the nose. High acidity on the palate with stems apparent, though still relatively closed. Very dry finish. Don't be afraid to age this 3-5+ additional years, not giving much at present.

PnP and consumed over next 5-1/2 hours. Quite delightful and fresh on PnP, and showed increasing complexity that I found quite interesting as it aerated over several hours. Notes of tart cherry, white pepper, and mineral were most prominent among TN, later making way to raspberry, blueberry, and hints of herbs, earth, spice and blood/iron. Mid-bodied, refined tannins, crisp acidity and a nice lingering finish. Drinking well now and will do so for a few more years.

12.8% abv. Dark ruby. Expressive blue fruit aromas. A fairly lean palate profile, but with good depth and length. Still fairly primary, this should continue to evolve.

I finished the '11 Hawks Butte a few mins ago, as it had been open for a few days. Figured the natural next step was to again, like last April '14, open the '11 Halcon next, which is now sitting in my glass. Seems pretty much like it did a year ago, with quite a bit of opening tension and coil, way more austere than the '11 HB, too. The presence of minerality here too, tart cherry, this will need …

PopnPour, tasted over 2 hrs in sub-optimal glassware, difficult to evaluate but color was an opaque dark red/purple. Somewhat tight on the nose with a touch of black pepper and dark berry. Palate quite closed down but similar to recent Copain syrahs with good concentration without a lot of weight.

Good acidity and tannins, but not that much weight. Takes well to a LOT of air. Second day + 2-3 hours of air, it finally came into its own a bit. Some oak, but well balanced with the light weight. Will be a very good food wine in a few years.

Opened about 2 hours ago, so that level of aeration was put on the bottle to start this note. As a contrast and beginning with the aromatics, I think about the 2011 Copain Hawks Butte I had from a week ago and that aromatic is all about cracked black pepper. With this vineyard higher up the topography, yet not far away, the aromatics are different with this Halcon exhibiting purple flower aromas, a little black pepper but nothing like the …
