still in good shape after 50 years. Nose: red fruit/blackberry. Mouth: no tannins left, very low in acidity, still fresh

Cork crumbled, but I poured it through a filter into a decanter and let it sit for a few minutes. So much more alive than the '78 Figeac I tasted earlier in the week. Just shows you how resilient Tempranillo is. Pretty significant bricking. Delicate nose of stewed figs, a little tobacco and some subtle floral notes I can't put my finger on. On the palate, the fruit is still present -- all raisins and prunes for me -- but …

First bottle was completely shagged. The second was hanging on for dear life. Has some salty, iodine things along with leather, tar, chocolate and teak. The palate is a little skinny with tart fruit rind bitterness dominating the flavor profile. It is seriously earthy on the finish.

The cork had a nice seal and was only about 3/4 soaked through- in incredible shape for its age, dark ruby red with very limited browning around the edges, in suspended animation here, a quiet and contemplative wine with the VA in check.

May have rated this a bit lower than before since I drank this at home side by side with a 1975 Contino Reserva (see review elsewhere) and it was a tough comparison with the outstanding Contino. Nonetheless, this is a very good wine. Light brick color. A bit light, slightly astringent. Needed food to really come into its own. Light cherry, orange peel, pepper flavors.

Medium red fading at edges. Intense nose with spice and peppers. Very lively for its age. Slight funkiness which blew off quickly. Cherry, leather. Very nice.

My pre-diiner sip of this was just like Musar - exotic, medicinal, with a bit of pong. At dinner, and after two stunning volnays, there was a definite earthy is-it-or isn't-it-TCA tone. I could live with it, but the others couldn't. Otherwise, very fresh, piney, and fully alive.

Ancient Rioja (1956 to 1976) (Contigo, San Francisco) : Healthy color. Anise, flowers and sweet black cherry-attractive nose. Bigger, lusher style with medicinal, licorice flavors. Rich and incredibly youthful, still quite bound up and structured. Harsher finish with acetone keeps it from being great.

Mature Riojas 1956-1976: López de Heredia, Cune, Franco-Españolas, Riojanas (Contigo Restaurant, San Francisco, California) : Bricked medium orange red color with 4 millimeter clear meniscus; earthy, roasted fish, autumnal, chicory nose; intriguing, complex, elegant, dried cherry, blood orange palate; long finish

This is really a delight. Sweet fruit and a bit of old school wood showing through, with lots of tertiary character - I thought blood, but black olives too. Not a big or powerful wine, but what you want from old Rioja. Lovely with game.

Light garnet with bricking at the rim. Mature, refined nose with a pleasing oxidative nature, red berries and cloves. Well balanced palate with polished wood, tobacco and cherry.
