A private tasting and dinner at a friend's (Amsterdam) : Upper shoulder. Big, firm and tannic, deep and broad-shouldered, muscular and sturdy, lively and strong, not refined but certainly bursting with vitality, cedar wood, earth, good length.

Mid/upper shoulder. In spite of this less than perfect level a completely vital, classic wine. Has the typical broad shoulders of 1959, well-structured, beefstock and nuts, cedar and gravel, good length, dried fruit. En pleine forme.

Good depth of colour, mature but lively; warm, mature and harmonious, vinous and slightly faded but classical, with blackcurrant, oak and ethereal topnotes; sweet, firm, juicy, complete, good weight, a rich, firm and ripe 1959, good tannic grip; good length, lighter but not drying. Wonderful, old fashioned claret.
