What a finely crafted lean and graceful single varietal Cinsault. Farmed from single vineyard planted in 1973, whole cluster fermentation, aged for 12 months in neutral FR oak barrels, bottled unfined and unfiltered. Pale+ ruby colour. Medium+ intensity aroma of cherries, cranberries, wild flowers, undergrowth, spices. Medium body, elegant and lean, red fruit earthy flavours with juicy and spicy edges, medium velvety tannins, medium+ acidity.

Slow-oxed this bottle for 3 days at 60 degrees. I was able to decant most of the bottle. I let sit at about 63 degrees for an hour. I wanted to continue comparing Sensory to Gabriel Glas (gold). Nose from Sensory was deeper, and meatier. Nose from Gabriel Glas was lighter and more etheric. Diving deeper: Gabriel Glas sported very round fruit of all kinds from berry to stone. I could pick out peach and apricot, hints of chalk, subtle …

This would be Christmas wine, so I decanted a glass and let the bottle slow-ox at 60 degrees. Picked up at auction, very lucky find, about a year ago and this bottle, while in my possession, never was laid down. The wax was not too pesky to remove. (Hate wax tops) Cork came out perfectly intact with no off odors. The one glass was poured into Gabriel Glass (gold) and sat for 3 hours at 68 degrees. Nose was exquisite …

This takes time to open, but it’s showing beautifully when it does, lots of dried dark berries, forest floor, baking spices, perfume on the nose, elegant mouthfeel, light body, medium plus acidity and a medium plus finish

This was an incredible discovery and definitely the favorite wine in the South African tasting we had. Light cherry red color, with an exceptional nose of violets, spiced, crunchy red fruits, earthy. Complex and beautiful on the palate, with a great balance between acidity and the velvety tannins it has. The finish is very long and persistent. To us at the table it seemed a mix between a Burgundy 1er Cru and a Barolo from Burlotto. Also on the plus …

Light red color. Not as easy to enjoy as the 2014 Soldaat, this takes about an hour to open up. Tight, structured, spicy, marks of red fruit, spices and tobacco. It is surprisingly light on its feet, almost elegant. It turns more interesting in the glass, more complex. No hurry with this. Easter lunch with Cathy at La Contadine.

The nose is extraordinary, light perfumed floral, pink rose and unripe strawberries. This wine makes me think of Arnuad Ente Santenots.

A private dinner (Restaurant Yarra, Bordeaux, France) : Rarely do we find Cinsault in the hands of such a gifted wine maker. Pofadder clearly expresses the essential varietal character with great precision on the nose, but there is so much complexity and elegance behind. Effortless souplesse, silky texture, very Burgundian in style (but obviously with a very different aromatic profile), perfumed, boudoir powder, flowers, such purity and precision, light on its feet, decadent elegance, percaline tannins, hint of cold ash, …

Pale ruby. Double decanted and tasted two hours later. A very complex nose seems almost like mashup of the Rhône and Beaujolais, as this is Cinsault with unusual delicacy and finesse offering very pretty aromas of ripe red cherries, raspberries, black pepper, violets and baked clay. On the palate this feels a bit less open, as the acidity and tannin seem to clamp down on the red fruit and violet flavors. This is Sadie so I have a good feeling …

Moderate ruby in the glass. Nose is flinty with fresh red fruit really blasting off. Palate is of medium weight with a strikingly high acidity and moderate alcohol. Tasted blind, thought it was Tassie Pinot Noir. Needs some time in the bottle to settle down and be approachable.

South African cinsault has been on a roll, and saide is leading the charge! Lots to love about this wine, beautiful summer strawberry, warm spices, hints of dark berry, earthy minerals on the nose, high toned and elegant palate, with powdery tannins, bright acidity and a lingering finish

Superb stuff. Strutted from the off with a Rhone-esque garrigue and raspberry. Quite a fruity entry but a savoury finish kept the focus. Terrific sense of depth. A real grown up wine and a real pleasure. Perhaps fading after 3 hours so drink sooner rather than keep.

Springboks vs France so a Sadie bombsquad trio of big guns were brought out to support. This, the first on 'field'. The initial nose and first few sips were tight. Cherry, pomegranate and red plum. After 15 minutes it opened up to reveal a complex texture wild strawberry, raspberry, cranberry and red currants. Teriary smoke and cinnamon. Followed by sweet leather and tobacco. Stony minerality weaves through along with still fresh soft fruit acidity. Glorious wine, many years potential to …

Tasting Ground official tasting, 2014 Eben Sadie part 2 - The Reds (Oinoscent) : This is pure Cinsault, the vineyard is located on the Western side of the Kasteelberg Mountain in the Swartland, on slate and decomposed shale formations. Average yield 28hl/ha. After picking, careful sorting is vital to get rid of both under-ripe and over-ripe berries. The whole clusters are then placed in an old wooden open-top fermenter, with one or two punch-downs by foot each day to slowly …

Light+ crimson Light lifted aromas of herb, red cherry fruits and tidal pool (like being in Kalk Bay!) Light-bodied with crunchy fresh acidity on entry, the wine is wrapped in soft Bing cherry and sliced strawberries. A sprinkle of white pepper matches sweetness from the Cinsaut fruit. The tannins have a hard-ish, steely edge to them, yet the flesh keeps them at bay, although the fruit seems more pastille-like (Black cherry) towards the back palate. A bright wine with a …

Our first bottle from the Sadie Family did not disappoint. Purchased on release and kept in our cellar. We've been patiently waiting on this wine to be ready and it was drinking perfectly. The color is a pale cranberry, very reminiscent of Gamay or Pinot Noir. On the nose, this presents very much like Cabernet Franc, minus the pyrazines. In fact, that's a pretty good comparison throughout; it's like drinking Cab Franc that lacks the green pepper notes. The fruit …

Stabila 91-92p

14% alc; Mid ruby to crimson edge. Initial aromas are crayon, molasses and demerara sugar. Then more complex notes come through with white pepper, raspberry and savoury notes. Light in body, the entry is a mix of juiciness, light syrupy Cinsault tones contrasted with sharp firm acidity, typical of Cinsault. Red cherry abounds; there is a chalky, chianti-like texture with some blue fruit. Despite the acid blade, the syrupy texture seems to take over and makes the back palate fade …

Purchased off the wine list at Doris Metropolitan to pair with beef tenderloin. Garnet color with scarlet hints. Muted nose for much of the evening with the emergence of high-pitched floral and red berry scents later on. Silky yet lively on the palate, revealing layers of red currant, mulberry, pepper, and hints of iodine. Only modestly tannic and nicely acidic. Moderately long finish of grippy red berry fruit cut with stone and a bit of beef blood. Very nice wine …

I like this wine, it is very Special Grape variety to make a monocru out of it, but Eben knows how to treat Special terroirs. It is elegant and the 14% alcohol are well integrated. Despite the power a of the wine you have a refreshing acidty. From style it could be a modern PN from Burgundy. Delicious. some blueberry, bramble, smoky notes and cedar Wood. I would give him 2 hours aeration

Fragrant, pure fruit intially light and feminine, becoming more substantial with air, showing cherryade and sadly some intrusive alcohol (which is odd, as the label says only 13%.) The ambition is clear, and I will leave the rest of my bottles for a few years.
