Oh man. Sadly, I had only a small taste--but what a sip! This is perhaps the best Sangiovese I've ever had. Ridiculously fragrant, with a complex bouquet of brambly fruit and herbal undertones. The palate is deep but suave; medium-bodied but highly concentrated with layers to spare. Soulful and impeccable. Remarkably, I think this may even reach greater heights in another 5 years.

2 bottles at a Soldera vertical. 1 porty and stewed bought from a shop in Montepulciano, the other from London. Second bottle perfect. Silky and rich, fine tannins but very long. Absolutely at its peak. Wine of the night which covered select vintages from 1983 to 2016.

Using Schott Diva Bordeaux glass (not a perfect glass for this wine though) but it was explosively aromatic and with ultimate elegance. The Musigny of Italy? Soldera dinner with Mauro All Soldera are serving with my own gabriel glass (yes I brought my own to the dinner 😅 and proved that it helps!) Ruby. The nose is neither bold nor aggressive, but offers incredible breadth, with layer after layer of sweet cherry, plum, black tea, violet, and incense. On the palate, sweet and dark cherry are met with nice acidity, mostly resolved tannins, and a plush, soft mouthfeel. Across all of this wine's superlatives, the majestic, silky texture is the stunner. And yet, for all the complexity, this is still a pure rendition of Sangiovese. Drink well for 10+ more years.

Soldera mini-Vertical (Il Grappolo Blu (CPH)) : At first the nose seems a little closed but it opened up nicely with mild spices and sweet tea. The cherry fruit on the palate is powerful and almost wild with still very harsh taninns. The acidity is stunning and collects everything nicely in this perfectly balanced wine. Dinner at 360 with Tom, Lili, and Keith et al. Wow, this is everything it's cracked up to be. Amazing nose of truffles, smoke and red fruit. Luminescent color that reflected the chandeliers in the glass. Lush, mature tannins followed by a wave of perfectly balanced red fruits. My WOTN.

Roy and The NYC Gang do Italy (La Grolla) : this was showing poorly when opened. completly closed. but after a few hours this really began to open. Sangiovese can be this smooth? ridiculous depth on the nose. Very light body. the only non dry chyrry profile tonight. more red berries and - i could not believe myself - PINE needles.. YUM!!! give it 10 years!
