M. Chapoutier, Cote Rotie, La Mordoree

Opened and drunk over 4 hours. Ruby with good bricking, a lovely mature Cote-Rotie with plenty of life left. Savoury with a certain meatiness and some leather but still showing some red fruits. Good acidity with some drying tannins but all still in balance.

Inexpressif au nez avec une bouche fluette à l'ouverture, le vin a été carafé 2h Nez élégant avec des notes fumées épicées et florales. Le fruit est encore présent. La bouche a gagné en chair par rapport à l'ouverture. Elle est soyeuse avec beaucoup de fraîcheur dans un style plus longiligne que large. L'aromatique est toujours sur le fumé et le floral principalement. Belle finale avec de l'intensité et de la persistance Superbe bouteille!

Opened and poured. Had alongside the ‘98 Fresh, vibrant, purity of fruit and depth, grilled meat. Really nice acidity, with integrated tannins. Nose and palate were great. After 2-3 hours, lost some of its stuffing, became more strict and less giving. Was a better bottle than the98. I had forgotten that I had this before, very nice re-visit.

Pop and pour. Savory and tart on the palate with medium+ body and medium finish. Some notes of chocolate and blood. Very nice if you like this style.

Decanted and served. Plenty of dark fruit left well integrated with sweet acid and mature tannins. Nice little aged Côte Rotie.

Decanted and served. This showed much better than the first bottle. After a little air, a restrained Northern Rhone with savory minerality and a long finish of crushed gravel, salt, and a hint of chocolate. Great with pizza.

Decanted and served. For two hours harsh, tart, and thin. Then a beautiful garrigue nose appeared but the tartness remained. After three hours some roasted meat was added to the nose and the wine softened considerably although I wouldn't call it enjoyable. In a confused phase? The flavors are youthful so it's hard for me to imagine it's past peak.

Decanted 4 hours. Deep ruby w slight orange brim. Bq w dark berries, smoked meat, red currants, violets. Still plenty of fruit, medium-to -full body, tannins softened (but still very much there). White peppercorns, leather and spices. Complex aftertaste, lasting 30+ seconds. Will last another few years. Surprisingly powerful for such an old Cote Rotie!

Decanted 2 hours. Bright ruby red with minimal bricking. Characteristic mature Cote-Rotie on nose, leather and somewhat gamy. Smelled promising but disappointing in the mouth. Thin with prominent acidity and underwhelming fruit. Tertiary characteristics barely in evidence for a wine of this reputation. Drinkable and pleasant but decidedly not worth the wait and seems clearly to be on a downward path. I expected quite a lot more having read other reviewers reports so maybe this was a rogue bottle.

Cured meat and cracked pepper. Smoky with raspberry and cherry cola. Well balanced and well aged. A truly great wine experience. Mistook it for Chianti in a tasting. But made sense of it based on the vintage and cured meat character. Love the cool climate syrah.

Great bricking. Orangish-red. How do you create a wine like this? Pull the cork and wham, a medley hits your nose. Pour it, twirl it, and the aromas go on and on. Smoky cured bacon, Andouille sausage, pepperoni, wet rusty steel, black dirt. Later, black olives, leather, tobacco and even hints of asparagus. I could twirl and sniff all night. Pronounced smoked meat and salami on the nose, and a good dose of brett. Red and black fruit, purple flowers, and black pepper. Palate is equally smoky and meaty, spicy, with sour fruit and significant acid. Tannins are quite soft. Medium body & alcohol, long and complex finish. Medium red, good bricking. Great complex nose of smoked beef, raspberries, ripe black olives, and damp black dirt. Smooth in the mouth. but uneven mid, and a short, somewhat dry finish. Fading from earlier bottles from 6 pack. One left to try (soon)

Drinking wonderfully with a 2 hour decant. smokey bacon/embers with balanced gaminess. Some mint and ?soapstone?. very smooth, not a bump in this, transition from nose to finish is pleasing. A very comforting wine. Someone said reminds them of leaves smoldering in the Appalachian mountains. If more comes my way, I will obtain.

After finished 2006 CdP Caillou Reserve and 1991 L'Oree white. It seems like we three still want to drink a little bit more so I open this wine and let it breath for 15 mins. Ooh...yeah !!! A med Garnet hue, with advanced bricking, captivating aromas of dank venison, smokey dark meats. Medium bodied, with saline, savoury tapenade notes. The acidity in decent check worked great with the lamb shank I ravished. Forest Floor bramble berries, stewed plums shrouded in a leather blanket. The finish was a tad short and slight drying but a fine bottle of wine, thanks M Chapoutier for making this gem from a somewhat maligned vintage.

Another '94 that exceeded my expectations. Surprisingly balanced for a Chapoutier. Very big wine with a lot of spice. Rich fruit handles the oak well.

I could smell this wine all night! A good Rhone stank, leather, with a big backdrop of blackcurrant. A medium body on the palate, great integration, more leather and deep fruit. One of those wines where the nose and mouth are an extension of each other. Long finish. It would have been better with food. This was my second Mordoree and it is a distinctive and consistent flavor.

Drank with "B. Dylan" chez lui. Medium garnet. Raspberries, violets, strawberries, intense black pepper and mushrooms. Mid-bodied, silky-textured with ultra-soft tanins, nice raspberry fruit, spices and high acidity. Very long, peppery finish. Excellent and ready to drink. 93-94.

Medium garnet with watery rim and pinkish hues. Fragrant. Strawberry, raspberrry, mushrooms, spices and wet forest floor. Medium bodied, good acidity. Some slightly astringent tannins, but the wine has so much else that they are not unpleasant. Good aftertaste, flavours similar to the nose bouquet.
