Blind Tasting with three cabs - Beringer Res. 2003, Columbia Crest 2014 and Robert Craig 2004. All wines were good, hard to pick a winner. The Beringer and Robert Craig were more dense, dark in color, the Robert Craig took a little more time to unwind. Teh Columbia Crest was a bit more vibrant in flavor and the color had a nice purple tint to it. None of them blew me away yet were equally enjoyable.

Father day dinner wine. Robert Craig 2004 - Dry, light fruit and oak. Body and color was in very good order. Nice drink! Wente Nth Degree Cab 2008 - Not quite as nice, more earthy but still very good. Color and body in tact as well.

At first, seemed a little lacking but just needed time to actually open up. 3 hours after opening and taking the first sip, it was an outstanding drink with cherry, cassis and a medium to long finish.

Came from the cellar a little warmer than desired. Decanted, poured back into the bottle and put in the fridge to drive the temp down a few degrees. The wine was transformed. Overall, very good.

I have no idea how Wine Spectator rated this a 74. Goes to show that ratings don't always have much meaning. Everybody really liked this wine. A full-bodied, but not overwhelmingly huge wine. Brambly mountain fruit, some peppery spice and a little earthiness. Nice core of ripe fruit but definitely not a sweet wine. In prime drinking stage with a 1 hour decant.

Very dark, mountain fruit on the nose and palate. Not really much nose, but a big burst of fruit, oak, herbs and structure on the palate. Full bodied with good concentration and a smooth, almost syrupy texture. Medium finish. This is a big and very dark-fruited wine. Perhaps just a bit "heavy" for my palate, but lovers of mountain fruit will enjoy this.

This has improved since my last bottle about 18 months ago. Even after a 3 hours decant it continued to improve over the course of the evening. Lighter in style than many Howell Mountain wines. Medium bodied and quite feminine in nature. This is not a sweet wine but there is a nice core of sweet red and black cherry fruit which comes to the fore on the mid palate along with more typical notes of leather and earth. The …

Decanted for an hour. Rich aromatics. Strawberry and currants - the wine was juicy and full of fruit. Tannins were rounded - with a smooth medium-long finish. Drinking very well.

All around disappointing. Not much there for a $60 pure cab.

Lovely dark mountain fruit. Rather soft and fleshy on the palate. Great flavors and complexity, good concentration, and a decent finish. Nothing not to like, but also nothing especially noteworthy.

Flat, thin. Great nose, but the taste doesn't match. Honestly, we poured it down the drain after half a glass.

Not sure what to make of this wine. After a 4 hour decant the nose was quite floral with some blackcurrant showing. In the mouth it was quite thin with some black cherry and blackcurrant flavors and the finish was short with smooth tannins. At the 6 hour mark the wine began to open up a little adding some weight on the palate and some additional length to the finish. My overall impression is that while this wine may improve …

NIce wine, but a bit flat. Rating is based on value, or lack thereof. Mingled dark fruit flavors on the nose on mouth, but almost no finish. Hey - I'd drink it at your house.

A Taste of Howell Mountain, nose of blackberry, black cherry, cassis, and briar, same on the palate, big body, very tasty, slightly fruit forward, hints of mocha on the mid palate, soft tannins present, medium finish.

Very nice, but not the greatest QPR at $50. I have another and will lay it down for five years or so. I found the tannins to be more dusty than silky, and kept wishing the finish was longer.

excellent wine. beautiful nose of chocolate and cherries with a massive upfront palate - love Howell mountain cabs. finish shortens up a little bit due to the oak so age for next 2 to 3 years but overall a great wine for $45 a bottle.

Wow.... this has got to be my favorite RC Howell Mountain so far. This wine was luscious, smooth, wonderful mouthfeel. Complex finish, wonderful fruit - this is liquid velvet in a glass. OMG!

This guy has been around J. Lohr, Hahn and now this. But we can't come up with his name apparently. Liquid chocolate and cherries on the nose which I assume is a massive oak job. Soft easy palate with an increasing tannin load. Rather short, boring finish. On the whole if you want some sweet fruit this will give it to you. I don't see anything that distinguishes it at the $70 price tag. Youthful, maybe it will broaden with …

Wow, big disappointment, light bodied, flowery aromas on the nose. Sweet tannins and relatively high residual sugar detected. Eating Sirloin tips helped the wine along. This is supposed to be a Howell Mt. appelation wine, in an outstanding vintage, it tastes diluted, not hearty, no finesse or complexity, one dimensional. I noticed WS gave it 74 points, I will be generous and give it 80 points Only 900 cases made, methinks they stretched out the harvest to acheive that volume. …

Massive . . in every sense of the word. It opens with multidimensional ripe berry, cassis, chocolate and some vanilla from oak. It is a traditional bordeaux blend with an exotic, modern fruit profile. True to its mountain grown origin, it is very big and dense on the palate with abundant tannins that overwhelm the finish. An amazing WOW that needs lots of time - 6-8 years minimum. Could be legendary - we will see where this goes.

Howell Mountain Cabernet (Newport Beach, CA) : I was rather surprised by how opulent this wine was. Aromas of plums, black currants, and dark chocolate followed by a New World palate of raspberry ganache, black cherries, and melted chocolate. Hedonistic and quite irresistible. Tied for my #2 WOTN. 91-92 points.

Am having the last two glasses from the bottle and all I can say is "WOW!!" The wine has really opend up..Big Fruit as Mountain fruit should be..This to me is one of the better Cabs I have had...The finish and balance makes it worth the extra cash..The wine as I said earlier is totally not ready when you open it...WAY TOO TIGHT!!! Undrinkable!!! Give it a few hours to open up and this lady really becomes a lady.Sexy, Seductive, …

I am a huge R.C. fan, and could not wait to get my hand, and lips on this Howell Mountain. I poured a glass right out of the bottle and the nose on it was very tight, but could tell the quality of the wine was there..I tasted and it was even tighter than I expected...In fact it was undrinkable, BUT!!!! BUT!!! I gave it an hour and the wine really, really started to open up. Was an orgy of …

Lots of red currant fruit on this cab. But also cigar, menthol, crushed rocks and dusty rocks that add depth and complexity. Doesn't really have the structure for long term ageing. But it's a joy to taste now. Drink now-2011. 88 pts.

Complex, with a mix of dried currant, black cherry and herb and mint notes. Firms up at mid palate and manages to keep the tannins in check, ending with a clipped aftertaste. Decant. Best from 2009 through 2014. 1,665 cases made. 'JL

Taste of the Vine 10/21 (Kierland) : Big green tanins get in the way of what seem to be ripe fruit. If the tannins melt this may be good but for now it is tough to tell.

This is one of the biggest wines I've come across in a long while. Breathing is key before enjoying. Bought thru futures from the winemaker/ownership of the vineyard. Only 700 or so cases made and it was worth the wait. I believe this will lay down for some time and be one of the better wines in my celler and on the market. 24 months in oak and from Howell Mountain this is an excellent bottle of wine! The little …
