Cadence, Ciel Cheval, Red Mountain

Opened this at a small gathering in our backyard. This was similar to the last bottle - i.e. a decent Bdx blend with some age, but nothing special. Three bottle lot from recent auction is now gone.

2006 vintage

2nd of 3 bottles. Cork was in great shape with this bottle, hardly stained past the bottom. This showed a little better than the first bottle, as it seemed more integrated, but I still found the elevated volatile acidity to be a little distracting. Not bad, but I wish I had more of the 2000!

Opened this after a really nice bottle of the 2000. Cork stained the whole way up, but I was able to get this mostly out except for a couple of small pieces. Unfortunately, the 2000 outshone this by a wide margin. This started off with elevated volatile acidity that gave this a sharp attack. Not overwhelming, but more than a little distracting. Giving it 92 only because it drinks like a 2016. Without knowing it was a 2006 I’m not sure I would have guessed it was a 2006. Drinking very well and maybe even very young. Great wine with a smoked tenderloin with friends. Honestly very primary and could go easily another decade+.

This was definitely on the back side of peak, but still enjoyable. Heavy and tannic, the fruit is mostly gone with muted secondary flavors. Could tell this was a great wine had it been consumed 5 years earlier.

What a fantasric blast from the past. Gorgeous, generous nose with sweet red and black fruit, a touch of leather and loads of character. Good acid on the palate, with tannin completely attenuated, and nice complexity.

This was hard to stop drinking! Still had the Red Mt. profile of deep, spicy black and red fruits with the long finish, but was smooth and starting to soften nicely. Think this had 5-10 more years of prime drinking.

Opened (bad cork) and let sit for an hour or so while we drank some chardonnay, Dark fruit on the nose, the palate was dark fruit, tobacco and a hint of spice. A nice long finish.

Agree with cwiebe - we enjoyed this but not sure we will wait too long on the last bottle. Tertiary notes in balance with some fruit that is beginning to trend toward overripe.

The most Bordeaux like of the WA Bordeaux blends I know. It's intense but not overwhelming. Good acidity, and the fruit flavors are balanced with tobacco and spices. At 8 years old, it's pretty good, not sure I would wait much longer.

Herbs, dark fruit, fairly, but not wonderfully, balanced. Nice Washington Cab blend to have with a Bone-in ribeye to kick off Thanksgiving Weekend. I did not enjoy this as much as the 02, 03, and 05 CDC. Can't remember what I thought of the 04. This is my favorite Cadence wine. One to go of these...wait until 2016 or so.

Coffee and some green vegetables on the nose. Palate is a spicy blueberry flavor, with the chocolate reoccurring. Well balanced although still a slight bit of booze on the front.

Big spice and herbs on nose. Very sweet and rich black fruits on palate, with some candied plums & minerals. Solid finish. Not up to par with Andrew Will's version.

This has really grown into a great wine. Smooth and silky with layers of cherries, berreis and currants. Bit of chocolate and cedar on the finish.

Nice but not as integrated as the 2005 Ciel du Cheval. May have been an off bottle, but still very drinkable.

Currants and berries with a firm core. Keeps opening up into deeper and deeper layers. Years to go on this one.

Really didn't like this wine. There were strange flavors that are atypical of red wine. It wouldn't be fair to score it given my disdain but obviously it appeals to others.

About 90 minutes after opening (no vinturi or decanter) this wine really started to shine. Nice medium/full body, great fruit and very smooth finish that lingers for some time. Drink up I'd you've got it.

Plum, other juicy dark fruits, and lots of menthol in this. Excellent.

Very nice. Still quite young looking with a reduced black purple note. Nose is quite intense, nice fruit, definite notes of cabernet franc, tobacco, cherry, high toned maybe a tinge of VA. Palate is very new world with a juicy cherry, blackberry midpalate that is sweet and ripe, lovely ripe tannins and unobtrusive acidity. Dries a little on the finish, which suggests that it is probably a good time to drink up. Really nice wine, good with food and without.

Very smooth, youthful blend from Washington. Plum, herbs, a long finish.

Pop and poured via Vinturi It still needed 30 minutes to come around and had understated but delicious deep feeling fruit. The finish is medium but nice. I feel it is still asleep and will reward cellaring anywhere from 3-5 years or a long decant. Not sure if this was a bad bottle or not. No fruit left in the wine, very low acid. Think it's past it's prime.

Decanted for a half an hour, not much sediment. Nose initially had notes of fresh herbs and cinnamon that gradually turned towards dark black fruits. Flavors of plum and sweet tobacco. Silky mouthfeel and layers of flavors. Finish sticks with you. Would purchase again.

nicely structured, with ripe fruit, soft tannins and nice acidity. Quite ready to drink.

Big, juicy, delicious example of the genre. Fleshy, oaky, low-acid. This has aged well, but drink up.

Blue and black fruit with touches of menthol, coal and cinnamon stick twangy spice. Pure clean and focused aromatics. Nice tannins and acidity. A complete wine from attack to finish. Consistently great fruit coming from this vineyard site.

This wine is drinking nicely at this time. The tannins are attenuated well.

2003 vintage

Dark red, slight fade at the rim. Nose of currants, blackberries, blueberries and spice. Medium-full bodied, tannins are noticeable but not overtly so; spice and the cabernet franc component really come through on the finish. Nice wine, but other than the spice from the cab franc, not terribly complex. Probably approaching full maturity, with another 5 good years in front of it, I would think.

This is an excellent wine and shows how complex Wash wines can be. 10-20 yrs ago "everything" (w/ occ exceptions) from this state was an overoaked fruit bomb = "Australia West". This has a really nice balance of fruit and earth/spice. A hint of pencil might even fool some in a blind Bordeaux tasting. Medium bodied with good length. Fun!

Wow, popped and poured and am fairly blown away by where this wine has evolved to. Tannins are structured but not in the way, and the first note off this is violets and white pepper. The finish is Cadence's trademark savory herbs, and very long. I can't wait to see where this goes in the next few years... pretty damn fabulous.

Nice well balanced wine that's still on the young side. Strong aromatics with blackberry, blueberry and tobacco notes, a bright fruit driven palate and medium long finish. Excellent right now with outstanding potential.

Had with herb crusted flannery ny strip. Much better than bottle 1 that was opened 2 years ago. Well balanced with fruit and structure on the palate. Blackberry on the nose and more red-type fruit on the palate.

Candied cherry fruits(cherry, blackberry) on the nose with some dark spices like clove. Fruity palate with a medium long finish. Nothing extraordinary and kinda lacks character but pleasant nonetheless.

Decanted for 2 hours. Tried when decanting and wine was quite tight. Drank over a two hour time period following the initial decant. Beautiful nose of mature fruit along with cocoa which opended up during decanting. Taste matched the nose and then continued into a long, sweet and smooth finish. The tannins balanced the sweetness. Pop & poured (poured half into a 375 for the next day or so). Upon opening the nose had leather, oak , and spice; the palate was silky for an instant with chewy tannins coming on strong. After 30 minutes the heat was on along with the tannins. After 2 hours the alcohol had faded some and there was more balance, chewy tannins. On the wine makers advice we soft decanted and drank this wine 24 hours later. This treatment opened up big round red fruits on the palate. Great structure and nice tannic finish. Excellent!
