Pax, Syrah Majik Vineyard, Sonoma Coast

No Theme Great Wine Sunday : Deep purple, high toned pepper and rocks with blue fruit notes. Palate follows with rocky blackberry, peppercorn, quite a lot of middle stuffing and a bright long finish. Very good Syrah to this lover of the grape Group 6th, my 3rd

Cool climate CA Syrah goodness... dark plum fruit, black olive, iron, iodine, porchetta, white pepper, and an ashy/volcanic streak. Massive savory flavor without much weight, a distinctive wine that deftly combines site and style. I might be underrating this.

This wine is far inkier and darker in taste than most of the Pax wines I've had before. More black fruit and in a very powerful way. Medium acidity and tannin, both being well integrated into the wine. There is also a savory note that I can't quite place along with the fruit that is quite nice.

The best Syrah I’ve ever had. Subtle fruit, aromas of pepper and strawberry jam, medium acid with nice subtle bite. 12% abv.

Adding this as a data point, since my experience was much different than the note below, perhaps because the wine has put on weight in the intervening months. This is among the inkiest 12% wines I’ve come across. The contrasts are pretty remarkable: broad and expansive and rich but light on the palate. The nose fantastic and evolves: blood, iron, black olive tapenade, lavender, white pepper, blackberries, roast meats. No decent; drank over three hours. Great wine.

More of that Pax cran-raspberry, cran-cherry, with white pepper, a little more weight than the appellation Syrahs and marginally better than those.
