Last bottle of a 3 bottle purchase and the best one of the lot. Deadset classic, beautiful left bank claret with an attractive perfume and palate, balance, still with lovely depth of cassis and graphite on the midpalate, fingertip intensity of tannins, and a fine refreshing seam of acidity drawing it all together. 13% ABV. If only all bottles were like this!

Astonishing colour, for a variable vintage, and 26 years old. Lovely appetising aromas of aged Margaux. Slightly tamarillo like a Margaret River wine. Surely this was very vibrant, intense in its youth. Jancis described the left bank wines of 1998 as stolid. This certainly is not. It�s expressive and lovely, I only wish it was a little more mature. On opening, it was fairly lean and acidic. A bit of time in the decanter, and this really developed into a Bordeaux of interest on both the nose and palate. The classic left-bank Bordeaux nose, perhaps more on the autumnal side of things, a touch below medium-bodied, supple and persistent, graphite, cassis and earth, a fine wisp of tannins, and a discreet acid line. Lovely. 13% ABV. From a bottle professionally cellared since release.

Our 2nd red tasted blind. Another 1988! Celebrating LF�s bday 30.11.2023 at Maillard. This has more fresh fruit, plum, cassis & dried tobacco leaves. Dusty tannins with complex layers of dried fruit & minerality. Thank you bro @juliansi

The nose is absolutely splendid! A delightful drink. Subtle notes of very fine black fruits on the nose, a hint of sweet candies and also, a touch of sweet minerals! Silky smooth texture on the palate, sweet, vibrant fruits! At its peak in my view and surprisingly dark in colour!

Drank after brief decanting at Champetre with the Oz. Opaque, inky black color. Very generous nose of black fruit, plums, earth, and cedar. Medium body, still decent fruit level but wine is showing principally tertiary qualities: mushrooms, cedar, earth, leather, smoke and a bit of lead pencil perhaps. My final bottle, this was ready to go from the start with an hour in the decanter. Drinking at its peak, it is not going develop further and probably at the start of a slow decline. Full of red cherry, blackberry, and tobacco, the tannin has resolved but retains bite. Everything is well balanced and rounded on the palate and finish. Highly enjoyable. 90+

Rauzan Segla vertical tasting, wine #4. Fully matured hedonistic and meditational Rauzan, slightly thinner and shaded than expected, but still showing good concentration, structure and elegance. A blend of 68% CS, 30% Merlot and 2% PV. Deep garnet. Intense aroma of smoke, mushrooms, dried cherries and plums, medicinal notes, vanilla, dry leaves. Medium body, velvety and structured entry with signs of tiredness, smoky and toasted fruit flavours, earthy hints. Harmonious balance, fine slightly worn out tannins.

Tasted blind. Inky and opaque. Was very closed at first and impossible to place. However, Cabernet notes started coming through, followed by a hint of violet. I thought this was a decade younger. Needs time� I�d say at least five years if not more (depending on how much you like to decant your wines). Really concentrated but balanced.

There is absolutely no need not to be enjoying this now as it is fully mature and in a perfect spot. In fact, I think that this will start its decline in the not too distant future. Everything is well integrated with decent depth and finish. It's not going to set the world on fire, but is a great drink at a decent price

A decent enough wine, but one for short term consumption, with not a lot of upside in waiting for further development. As per previous notes, the nose is very appealing with red berry and blackcurrant aromas. There is good balance on the palate but everything is a little one dimensional, with a rather lean and clipped finish.

Straight from the Chateau and the surprise wine of a Canon & Rauzan Segla mini vertical. For me 2nd best wine of night and best in terms of pure addictive drinkabilty. This wine has evolved perfectly. Cassis. mulberry, leather, tobacco - lovely rounded evolution but still some firmer backbone evident. One�s lips were always drawn back to the glass for more.

I feel this has reached its optimum, and should be consumed over the next 5 + years . The nose is mature and deep full of ripe berry fruits, and holds great promise. However, the palate is a little lean, but with a decent depth. Similarly the finish is one dimensional and on the short side. It is an enjoyable and straightforward wine, but not one for long term development. Minimal time in the decanter is needed.

PnP impressions: Cork is in great shape and the color looks relatively youthful for a 20 year old bottle. Nose has cured meat and red fruits; savory roasted nuts; rich worn leather; herbs; graphite, cigar box. Palate has good energy. Medium to full in body. Wine showing medium acidity and balanced tannins. Red plum fruit. Very nice. Finish not short but not massive. Decanted and had open for ~3-4 hours and not much change over that time period.

Avoid. Bland, thin, short and unexciting for the price. Glad I sold my other case in 2009 for double what I paid for it en primeur. Have picked away at the odd bottle for 19 years and cannot once remember feeling truly glad I bought this wine. Hoping 2015/16 vintages prove a better investment.

Fully endorsing previous note, it has a good nose full of blackcurrant and berry fruits. On the palate it is classic old style Bordeaux with tobacco present and strong tannin with a medium finish. Everything is balanced with the wine but it is a little one dimensional and lacking depth. I do feel that this does not have the structure to be a long time drinking wine and will look to consume mine over the next couple of years.
