Christmas cake, licorice, dark plum, dark cherry, dry fruit. Alcohol not shy. Quite heavy for my evolving lighter and lighter palate.

Ok. Seriously….. 30 years old. It held its color, hints of leather, petrol. Still a hint of fruit and good structure. Such a great surprise!

Easter Dinner ~ decanted 3hours ahead. Dark ruby colour. Slightly meaty, cassis jam and sweet vanilla notes on the nose. Slow, lingering legs. Generously fruited palate ~ cassis, blackberry and raspberry with dense, integrated tannins. Rich and mouth filling gradually softening at the finish. Beautiful drinking now but could go a few more years.

Past it’s peak. But still very enjoyable. First 15 min. in an awkward phase. Almost cardboard scents. But after 2 hours the fruits start rolling-in. Not as intense as it”s previous glory. But still very mouth-filled. Though tertiary nose is prominent. But not block the fruit lifeline. Past it’s prime but still alive.

A nose of sweet black fruit, floral notes and spices. Viscous and cloying, there is a good level of acidity and tannins. The spirity and bitter inflected finale is somewhat disjointed.

Double decanted before serving, whiff off decanter was soooo inviting. Dark fruits, spice mixed with a bit of menthol. Aussie Shiraz! Drinking this was a delight again dark berries, opaque in glass, with medium plus length finish. Will visit other half of bottle next night to see where it goes. Love the Penfolds Bin 28, 128, 389 (my pain point in pricing is 389).

I bought a case of these from Liquorland (AUS) as they were on special. Quite dark, a deep inky crimson/purple colour. Dark fruits on the nose. Subtle black pepper spices, light bitter chocolate notes on palatte. Not as refined as the next level Penfolds (nor should it be) and I would describe it as a bit 'coarse' overall. Nevertheless there is a power there that is undeniable and would be great to try again over the next few years. I …

Wow. Still going strong after 23 years. Berry and plum notes, well integrated tannins. Very smooth. The '99 was one of the stand out vintages in the late '90s, early 2000s for Bin 28.

Big and extracted but not overdone. Polished tannins and alot of quite well integrated oak. Velvety and deep black & red fruits. Perhaps on the cooked/jammy side but not flabby. Where is the black pepper??! Slightly one dimensional perhaps for the price, but what it does do, it does well

Penfolds Kalimna Bin 28 Shiraz. Haven’t had a Penfolds for years, except for an RWT a couple of months ago, which is a totally different ballgame. I had forgotten how powerful these wines are. Still purple and I thought massively over extracted. Rich but smooth tannins and medium high acidity. I found this interesting because I was advised that this wine was ready to drink but I thought it was far too young. But, not sure how it would age. …

47 year old Penfolds....... Bottle looked in good condition with a 30min decant. Surprisingly still some good fruit starting to emerge through the dominant secondary characters. Soft plum with Grandpa's tobacco, old leather and a touch of dark chocolate. Palate is soft and mellow and a pleasure to drink. So happy this wine is alive.

The only previous time I had had Kalimna Bin 28 was in 1990 and the lovely, balanced 1985 vintage. So I had hoped at nearly 20 years to get similar with the 2001 but it was all very odd. Dark browny, red colour and almost aggressive fruitcake taste. Like an old style Rioja on steroids with too much oak. Remarkably healthy and lively but just not very enjoyable. Not a trace of elegance or indeed balance. Earns respect but not …

Now heading for the exit, but not there yet. Some overall browning of the dark garnet red colouring. A nose of black treacle, bovril (umami), tomato paste and geranium leaves. Doesn't quite have the full body it used to have, but the nose is all still there in the wine. Some soft tannins and acidity. Good length. The drinking window has proved to be a little conservative.

Excellent, really last bottle, after false alarm with previous bottle in 2019. 14.5% alc. which is high but tannin, developed fruit and acid balance it so it's relatively unnoticeable. Very similar comments to previously. Colour: dark red berry Bouquet: developed earthy black fruits, spice, boot polish and liquorice Palate: as bouquet, full bodied as it opens out over 3 hours, dusty liquorice and aniseed character, very big soft fine grained tannins, long dry finish. Still holds up well on 2nd …

Courtesy of Sam's father; turns out I quite like Shiraz once it's twenty years old. Balanced, not entirely overpowering anymore. He says a previous bottle was too plummy, too jammy; nine if that stuff here.
