Outstanding! Immediately floral upon opening, although the cork was exceptionally hard to pull. Flavors of dark plum with leather and graphite. Resolved tannins produced a luscious garnet smooth vino that improved significantly with decant and was fine after a week in the fridge. Really delightful to know that well aged (20+ years) Sagrantino can be so amazing. Just need to live a few lifetimes :)

Rare find this is!! Great 20+ year old sagrantino di Montefalco from top Umbria house Arnaldo Caprai. Dark fruit, some tobacco in the nose. Much depth and complexity in the palate. After twenty years the tannins have integrated.

Beauty! Time has tamed this one to a very opaque, smooth, complex black cherry and plum with nice complexity and finish. Didn’t decant and the initial cedar notes blew off over the course of an hour.

CT offline in Tokyo (1 star L'Effervescence) : This is an unwashed and unruly medieval warrior: a minimum of refinement in a full bodied barbarian. Ruby red. Nose is filled with both red and dark fruits, coffee notes and wet leaves in the fall. M+++ tannins that mellowed over the evening. M++ acids that speak italian. Fabulous concentration and good length. Not complex. Not layered. Rustic and a great example of such wines. Would work well with anchovie-garlic pizza today. …

Cellartracker in the flesh with Stefan and Akiko (L'Effervescence, Tokyo, Japan) : Medium intensity aromas of red cherry, berry and plum. Very slight biscuit and leather notes with cream and spices as well. In the mouth the wine has medium plus acidity with flavours of cherry over plum. The wine is quite savoury and slightly chewy tannin encroaches on the juicy medium plus length finish with cherry and leather notes persisting. Nice.

Wonderful and mature Sagrantino... This wine was just perfect. The wine gave away aromas of dark berries, cherry stones, cedar, game and pipe tobacco. The palate was filled with fine, soft and mature tannins, smooth red and black fruit, meat, leather, balsamic notes and good acidity.

18c; no decant; viscous, dark purple; complex nose of wet earth, black cherry, spiced cidar, barn and blue-cheese; rigorous structure, with ripping tannins, brisk acidity and plush fruit, giving a long finish; touch of blue-cheese, rich black and red cherries, prunes, mint, cinammon, tobacco, black pepper, funghi, sage; complex, memorable (wish i had a case); 18.

Wow. This was quite a nice surprise. Last tasted over 3 years and it was tight as nails. While it is still young in need of further cellaring, it showed nice secondary and tertiary aromas of sweet tobacco, cedar and vanilla. This is a powerful fullbodied wine with a dense structure and very pronounced acidity. Very unique and individualistic. Beautifully long tobacco flavoured finish and palate. Looking forward to opening my last bottle in another 3 years or so.

Wino Guys Weekend (WGW) #1; 1/4/2008-1/5/2008 : Dark ruby/black colour; opaque. Aromas of fruit loops, peach, dark fruit, and minerals. Medium-bodied, a little simple, showing minerals, black fruit. Tannins are quite firm through to the short-moderate finish that lasts 20-25s. Initially 87 points. Puts on significant weight with several hours in a decanter, adding complexity in the form of dark fruit and licorice. Upgraded to 90 points. Leave it in the cellar for 3-5 years.

Drinking nicely now, tannins are integrated but could soft a bit more with time. Powerful palate of dark fruit, earth, violets and cooked meat.. I'll hold my other bottle for another 3-5 years.

I'm very impressed at how this wine is coming along. The tannins are noticably rounder compared with the last bottle opened (two years ago). Still lots of complexity, but in a much more evolved way. Nice.

Italy Trip 2006; 3/18/2006-3/29/2006 : Deep ruby, almost black center. Strong nose of blackberries, black fruits, meaty and balsamic notes, violets, nutmeg, with oak that blows off after a bit of air, quite complex. Very smooth on the palate with good acid balance; some dry tannin make it excellent with meat. These tannins are perhaps the biggest drawback at this stage. I'd still give it a few years to even out.

Thanksgiving featured wine. Drank well on the day. Decanted 2 hours prior to drinking. About 375ml left in the carafe unfinished coverd with plastic wrap and comsumed on Friday at dinner - even better tasting than the night before. Had with spaghetti and meat sauce on Firday.

Deep concentrated plum, currant and liqueur aromas. Quite firmly structured for now, with tannins and acids most prominent now on long finish. Better in another few years.
