Decanted 2.5 hours prior to service. The 2016 Barrosu “Riserva Franzisca” pours a deep garnet color with a near opaque core; medium+ viscosity with no staining of the tears and some signs of sediment. On the nose, the wine is developing with notes of ripe and desiccated strawberry and bramble fruit, red flowers, black pepper, Twizzlers, leather, star anise, and granite rock. More tannic and denser than the 17 ‘normale’ consumed alongside. Carries itself a bit drier because of the slightly higher alcohol. Packed full of character, hay, a slight dried fruit but again fresh and pure.

Lovely, herb-and-flower-scented Grenache/Garnacha emphasizing more transparency over the concentrated "Barrosu" bottling--this reserve bottling is drier and much more cooler than its sweeter daughter. Some cherries, stone and herbs in the middle with a slightly saline finish. Gentle, refreshing, pure and ethereal. Although the alcohol is high, the wine is not heavy or hot. This wine is balanced but basic. Fruitier than other cannonau I’ve tasted, and that’s the defining feature. After that it just tastes like . . . wine. No idea how this justifies the price. Decanted for at least an hour; but taste never really varied after opening.
