Rust Vrede, Estate Red, Stellenbosch

Drinking so delicious right now. One of my favorite wines. 2 bottles to go and will do my best to stretch them out. Feels like this could easily go 10-20 more years to further evolve.

2014 vintage

The cork was very brittle and not easy to remove. Luckily the wine had no defect and was full with fresh acidity which gives the wine a good balance to plenty of dark fruit. Easy to drink, but watchout for the age of the cork plug

2010 vintage

Considerably more smoke and leather and herbs on this one this time. Syrah coming through well. Excellent with anything grilled.

2014 vintage

6 hour slow ox, brown color and 25% or so transparent. Nose has earthy balsamic, green pepper, dust, and iron/beef blood. Palate has bright cherry, balsamic, cranberry, blackberry and green pepper, with lavender or other wild light herbs. Palate is more graceful than our experience 26 months ago; Some chewy tannin but overall a very elegant wine and nothing like the powerful, tannic beast of the last bottle.

Safe bet as always! Fruity, yet full bodied

Garnet in color. Nose of raspberries, leather, and earth. Taste of raspberries and crushed dark berries, tobacco, hints of vanilla and earth. Resolved tannins, solid acidity, and bright fruit, particularly for each one of your old wine from South Africa. Probably at work just past its prime but drinking nicely. Drink over the next five years.

This was a very nice bottle with aromas of black current and blueberry, with a hint of smoke, roasted coffee and pepper. Mediumbodied plus on the palate, with good tannines to structure all the dark frukt, decent acidity and a warm finish. Early maturity with time on its side, but good now.

This one enjoys breathing - great cab backbone with a spicy Syrah undercurrent that emerges as it opens. Lots of cinnamon and black pepper emerging. Had with Thanksgiving and initially found the Cab a bit strong but very much enjoyed as it opened. Great stuff.

A complete wine. Well integrated spice and fruit, opens up wonderfully after 45 minutes. A great Thanksgiving and Christmas wine given the cinnamon, plum, and vanilla.

This is a delicious wine. Decant at least an hour, as it is wound tight with massive structure (St. Julien like). Fruit becomes accessible and soft after 2-3 hours. Very little oak. Lots of acid and tannins so is killer with food and less so on its own. I see a lot of promise here and went out and bought the last 5 bottles at a local shop.

Laced with acidity from the attack through the finish, there's a pucker factor still going on here 9 years on. The nose is clean, the fruit and soft tannins keep up with the acidity mid-palate, and then the acidity dominates the spicy finish for a lengthy 45 seconds. International Blind Tasting II (The Woodlands, Texas USA) : Opened and let breathe in the bottle for 1 hour before tasting. Eye: dark rusty red color. Nose: strong earthy aroma, not much fruit but was still pleasant floral, forest and smoked spices. Palate: softening tannins, subtle fruit, medium body, medium finish. Nose and palate improved after a further 90 minutes of breathing. Oldest wine of the blind tasting but held its own well and was still enjoyable.

2010 vintage

didn't take my own advice to leave these alone, and was handsomely rewarded. unyielding nose, but palate was expansive and showed well integrated oak spice without overt lumber, classic cab cassis and gravel and supporting structure, and the syrah and merlot added just the right amount of lushness and juice. what a class act this is, and if you have the opportunity to visit the estate, it's a gorgeous property!

Third wine tasted at Rust en Vrede with Coenie Snyman and the first vintage of the Estate bottling. This bottling is made up of 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Shiraz and 7% Merlot. on opening: austere and closed. ten minutes later: generous fruit, some sweet but rough tannin. an hour later: much more classically structured, syrah contributing nicely to the fruit with plenty of cab/merlot structure. i'd leave it alone for 5-7 years before opening, or give it at least 2 hours of air.

2001 vintage

Dark blackish purple in appearance with nice fruity and herbaceous nose with hints of tobacco and earth. This South African red blend is medium-bodied, easy drinking, somewhat tannic with a flavor-profile of red and blue fruits, grassy herbs, tobacco, wet soil, and a bit of oak. Very lithe and zippy on the palate with hardly any discernible alcohol despite the 15% indicated on the label. A decent easy drinker but short of spectacular.

The wine looks brick colored. The legs are slow. There is moderate sediment in the bottle. It smells like black currant (cassis) and juniper. It tastes like black currant (cassis), tar and fur. The body is full. The wine has smooth texture. The wine finishes long. The wine has low acidity.

We initially had this at a Christmas party last year and were impressed. Saw it on the shelf recently, so picked up a bottle to see if we still thought it was good stuff. Can't say this experience was as favorable as the first, but this wine did open up after a splash decant and was quite enjoyable with pork tenderloin. Not a whole lot of fruit, but a deep, dark wine with a good finish.

Clean fruit, abundant ballpoint pen, dark chocolate and crème de cassis. Massive attack to say the least. Lovely balanced palate with quite intriguing acidity and quite extrovert tannins. Very nice texture and structure. Needs some rest in the cellar to show its very best. 55+ second length on the finish.

Brought/drank at Thomas & Mia's place. Still absolutely fabulous. Mature and in perfect balance. Holds well. Maybe at peak for another 3-4 yrs.

From a 1.5L: I recommend decanting for one hour before consumption. It was a bit tighter than expected at first. Once it opened up it was very nice. I am not sure this wine will improve greatly from this stage.

This is a pretty good wine but it doesn't have the flavor profile I like in my Cabernets. I also found the acidity to be a bit much, even overpowering the tannins. The price seems right at $30 but this is not a wine I would buy again. Will be interested to read other Cellar Tracker community Tasting Comments as this vintage becomes more widely available.

first sniffs are a bit unpleasant, but then (with air and time) improving. this is indeed like an older gentleman, still in good shape. surprisingly there are sufficient tannins for the next 10 years to come, doubt that it will be worth the wait. ruby, opaque, only 1m fading after 20 years. nose: tart cherry,cooked red fruit, cigar box. palate dominated by acids and tannin. a bit rough on the edges. 14 Caudalie. drink up.

Extremely classy, especially in its obviously expensive-feeling texture. Well balanced and certainly reminiscent of Bordeaux in that the stellenbosch smoke is very minimal and there is very little spicy oak or any herbaceousness. The lack of any noticeable fault is actually what is most noticeable about this wine. Perfect for a dinner party where you want to impress with minimal risk of offending a picky customer.

Needed plenty of air, but opened nicely with a little tobacco, coffee flavors surrounded by dark fruit. i would guess good for a couple of more years.

purchased at the Estate in 2002. eye: dark garnet, opaque in the middle, 2mm fading, thrown sediment. nose: dark red fruit, hint of 'fruit in rum', dust. patate: medium body, delicious acids, prominent tannins, lavender, bouillon, dries weeds, spearmint. 14 Caudalie. this has 5+ years of life expectancy.

Blind home wine tasting with MOT Scoring sheet (4 Bordeaux Blends and 3 whites) : Earthiness, chalky and pepper are clear on the nose. This is a very good wine (even though for some reason my score only gave it a 90 - I seemed to enjoy it more like a 94) with good heavy body and a slight hint of molasses on the nose. Long finish.
