Immediately after opening it looked rather earthy, but it opens up very nicely. Fragrant and shining bright. Extremely deep and quite complex fragrance with cool red berries, leather and finest tobacco and a few green herbs. Fine extraction, typically deep and cool mineral and medium bodied, fine, but powerful structure of a great gevrey. Bright red complex fruit and impressiv lean, but powerful finish like a cold steel blade in your throat.;-) Forget about the points of young age. Its singing now and fullfils his status. Delicious.

Well isn't this just delicious?! Judging from some of the pro reviews, and given the power of the '09 vintage, it looks like this wine started powerful and tannic, but has now thankfully softened into something very long and soothing. I have always found the Chambertins to be the most rustic of the grand crus in the Cote de Nuits. This wine defies that description. Clearly aged, light in colour, brownish at the rim. Wonderful - and classic - nose dominated first by cherries and a spicy tone of oak, then to more matured fruit like prunes. Big, brooding and a little sullen. Two hours in the decanter managed to coax a bit of liquorice into the flavour. Decent red fruits nose and to drink. A bit of tannin. Still young, though showing amber at the rim. I’ve had this 9 years and can’t really afford to buy Burgundy of this class anymore. Gevrey Chambertins (A Day in the Wood Shop) (Beltramo's, Menlo Park) : Light ruby. Some initial hydrogen sulfide funk blows off. Elegant feel with good roundness yet strong underpinning of acidity. Just a hint of sweetness. Lots of soil, some sappiness, herbs and prominent anise/licorice tones at the end. This seemed less dressed up and more transparent than any of the 4 Premier Cru wines.

Pinot Fight night (West Vancouver (Jeff's house)) : Surprisingly New Worldy. At the outset (blind) most people were guessing this was not Burgundy. Deep red/purple color. Quite a tannic and solid wine. Good medium body. Perhaps closed at this time? Nice cool cherry cough drops. The wine mellows out over the evening, but never opens up. Still, a nice drink.

Slightly reserved nose of pepper and earth. Color is a dark red, clear and sparkling. On the palate the wine shows good acidity with a light-medium body, tastes of steel and fruit, and firm tannins for a pinot noir. Shows a long finish with no bitterness or off tastes. This is going to turn into a very fine Burgundy.
