Butterfly Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon

Purchased at an auction to see how JB's cabs age and based on this 2010 sample, I am excited! Excellent. A lighter more natural style.

Medium garnet color, a bit tawny. Vibrant black cherry and spice aromas accented by green pepper notes. Medium plus acid. Medium body. Medium smoothed tannins, definitely there but very quiet. Lots of baking spices on the palate; cinnamon, with broad cuts of fruit. Finishes with hits of tobacco.

A big wine...huge even. Concentrated, quite fresh, bold, and still oak heavy. This bottle had years of life ahead of it. Far from a preferred style, but the quality is undeniable. 92-93.

Now, this is what I was hopeful for when I purchased several bottles a few years ago. Nice dusty tannins, a bit of tobacco leaf, and enough fruit to compete with the acid. Two remaining.

I have had this wine before and enjoyed it. This bottle I decanted for a couple of hours while prepping dinner. Tri-tip with thyme and black pepper, roasted brussel sprouts, roasted potatoes with oregano and garlic, and grilled asparagus. Needless to say the wine went beautifully with dinner. Heavy currant with some pepper on the back of the palate. A lovely bottle.

A pleasant enough Cab. Just expected by this stage, it would have gained more weight. More generous on day two. So, with four remaining, I will try another next fall.

I picked up this bottle in a poker game. Recommended by Chris as it was his buy-in so I chose it first. Good call. Red/dark maroon color and good clarity. Big fat legs run down the sides of the stem. Cassis aromas and a beautiful baking spice. Medium weight with oaky red fruit and cassis. Medium acidity and fine gritty tannins. Good balance and very long finish. Paired with beef wellington for Xmas dinner.

This is coming into its own! Powerful yet classy, varietally correct bouquet of currant, peppers, and gravel. Concentrated and lush on the palate...and for the first time that I recall showing a cr�me de cassis textural 'sweetness' and weight. Complex finish. Great wine! 93-94.

I haven't written a review in a while. After a lot of experimentation, I've migrated almost exclusively to the Old World. Lower alcohol is the primary reason, since it allows an extra glass without adding to my next day's woes. Plus it doesn't overwhelm my dinner, which is when I usually consume wine. This continues to develop nicely. I noticed more (oak imparted) dill notes than in previous tastings. The wine features ample substance to stand up to the oak treatment. Medium plus acid, medium plus tannin, powerful yet remarkably balanced, and very long. Overall, it is still several years away from maturity. 94-95

Decanted for 7 hours prior to dinner. It opened up somewhat, but this cab needs a few more years to strut its stuff. All the particulars are in place. Potential to be spectacular. Very enthusiastic about the prospects of the remaining bottles in my possession.

I have had this wine a couple of times. The last showing overly impressed me, primarily because it was blind tasted next to some high end Bordeaux varietals. Placed this in a tasting lineup double blind for friends after a 2008 Leoville Barton, and it did it's job. It had experienced palates thinking it was the 2nd growth on account of its power. Great Bordeaux drink like this wine; this cannot be overstated. It features tremendous depth, grip, and fork and knife tannins. Decant for 6-8 hours or more if drinking now. This wine shows best on the third day after it is opened. Exceptional quality!

PnP'ed. I am very inclined to agree with the CT drinking window which suggests this won't be ready for a few years. It was very young. Very strong tannins which overpowered most everything else. Hadn't settled very much after an hour in the glass. Needs more time.

Drank this alongside a 2005 Le Serre Nuove Dell' Ornellaia, a 2006 Beychevelle, and a 2008 Troplong Mondot at a tasting I hosted, all blind; it held its own or showed even better. Placed it in the lineup after the TM and before the Beychevelle. It's quality stunned all tasters and confirmed my impressions of the seriousness and ridiculous value of this wine.

Beautiful wine as before. Huge nose of cassis, tobacco, cocoa. Palate is drenching with fruit and spice notes. Finish is very long with mouth watering tannins. Absolutely delicious.

The darkest color cab I have ever seen. Not an overly expressive nose, but on the pallet very dark currant and black cherry. Love the tannic grip in the end. Grill a rib eye with this bad boy...you are going to have a great time

Nose of raw red meats, all the elements of Cabernet Sauvignon, including blackcurrant. The stunningly rounded palate commands attention at all phases. Minerality stars in this mind-bending offering. Decanted for 2.5 hours prior to dinner. Comprehensive nose of wet dirt, funk, chocolate, mocha, candied cherry, and cinnamon spice. Palate follows with dried cranberries, chocolate cake, nutmeg, cherry cobbler, and orange peel. PnP, served non-blind. Even better than my last experience, and an excellent, well-balanced food wine. Slightly more old school than new, this shows restraint, is well-lifted and obviously well grown - what's not to like? A gift from ChirisInSunnyside, and one, frankly, that exceeded expectations on the night (not that I doubted Chris, but still learning what WA winegrowers are truly capable of, especially newer projects). highly recommended . Not for the fruit/alc bomb crowd. Worth seeking out.

Big acidity on this one. Bright, tangy red currants and cherry with a cranberry zing on top. Allspice on nose, vanilla bean lingering on the lengthy (though subtle) finish. Great structure for food.

Tasted from 2 different bottles over 3 days. Kept getting better. Huge nose of cassis, cigar box, baking spice. Palate is dense full throttle cab with cassis, black cherry, tobacco leaf, dark cocoa. Tannins are smooth and very prominent up front, more subdued on second day. Excellent powerful wine for a steak or by itself if you wait long enough. Still a baby with lots of upside in a few years. 92+.
