Having had a poor run of NZ pinot lately I was thinking they were all somewhat grape juicy but this one was spectactular. Rich scarlet, with powerful nose like an Oregon. Slightly spicy but dark fruit in taste, with really long finish. A bit sweet maybe. Absolutely tremendous.

Great wine- structured and with good fruit. To me the best NZ Pinot along with Felton Road. Was drunk after a 2004 Volnay from Lafon. And sat in the company absolutely fine- quite different - a far more masculine wine than the Volnay as one would expect

Dry River Pinot Noir Vertical Tasting and a few others (Le Petit Sommelier) : Beautiful nose, very clean fruit with great oak framing, nutty, roasted almond, walnut and sweet spices. Denser in the palate than the nose, spicier, cinnamon sticks, there is a Brett funk too but only adding to the complexity, elegant yet powerful with a long finish. Outstanding quality, this is a truly magnificent “old world” wine. 95

Cherry, strawberries, blue berries. The mouth is rasberries nicely tied to light tannins,. There is a faint overlay of white pepper but its balanced with leather and plums / strawberries

Needs time in the decanter as it still has some acid to take it through to 2020 if cellared well. Typical Dry River, depth, length dark cherries, relatively big Pinot that will go the distance.

Carmine color with purple rim. High toned nose - very floral with cola nut. Quite full with very juicy cherry fruit. A bit bitter with peach skin notes. Quite a tart piquant finish. I can see the combination of fruit and tart leading to candy descriptors, but i think this avoids that descriptor. Certainly new world. 13% ABV.

Dinner at Mike and Cathy's place (Wellington, New Zealand) : Under cork. Colour primary purple. A bouquet of bright red fruits, including licquered and a little confected. Aromas of raspberry, kirsch, red cherry and crème de cassis. In the mouth, very ripe and tangy. Quite primary, very bright and pretty. Very deep and muscular style - very gamey and meaty with impressive depth on the palate. This needs a long time to unwind. Impressive but wont be to everyone's taste. And is it pinot? I'd be hard pushed to spot it as such.

An Afternoon at the Sampler : The nose is concentrated and spicy, with very ripe, almost jammy black cherry liqueur aromas. The palate is less sweet, quite tannic, and spicy. This is a big wine and for me lacks acid. The palate is better than the nose. Not much pinot character.
