Guenoc, Cabernet Sauvignon, California

Certainly past its prime, but not bad at all. Still a bit of fruit left but mostly tertiary with some forest floor, mushroom, and cedar.

Didn't seem true to it's varietal.

This is pretty interesting Cabernet. I popped the cork, poured a small taste, got some astringency, and decided to decant. The decanting and swirling exposed a wine that to me is truly different from typical Napa or Lake County Cabernet. It has a soft, ripe plum, almost sweet fruit profile and mouth feel very similar to a Pinot that has some whole cluster fermentation. Nice fruit, but very basic. Ok, we need to be real this is a sub $10 bottle, so basic is to be expected. Was trying this out to find a party priced cab and tasted this against 2009 Beringer's Founders Estate, which had a bit more going on. I am a fan of Guenoc wines as they can deliver a lot for the money. The 2007 cab is really nice, but this didn't have the same mouth filling fruit or …

Nice bouquet of spice, red fruit and notes of vanilla. Sour cherries, spice, cedar and short finish. Overall, this is a good wine that should have been drunk several years ago.
