Large group Rioja / Spain tasting tonight at BLVD Kitchen in Minnetonka MN. From one of my favorite long time wine buddies Dave D. The producer style has never been my cup of tea and still isn't. A bit rich and in need of some zip to be in my wheelhouse. Love Dave, not so much this wine :).

2001 vintage

Monthly Tasting Group: Spain (BLVD Kitchen & Bar, Wayzata, MN) : Very dark red/purple color. PNP, drank a glass over 45 minutes. Well, it's finally starting to get there. Blackberry, black cherry, scorched erth, dense minerality, high toned, full bodied, still firm tannins but they're loosening now. Yes, it is big, but it is just now becoming approachable.

Getting close to a good early maturity. The coarse oak edge has receded and tannin is tolerable with food. There's a rich, dark fruit with a kind of inner sweetness to it framed by a deeply mineral vein reminiscent of Priorat wines. This regained some surliness after a night in the fridge so I think a few more years downstairs are indicated, but my assessment from 11/2014 seems about right.

Pizza Night with (Mostly) Italians: Respect the Pie (Candie's, Mpls) : Black fruits, dense and full bodied, really high toned, rich layers of succulent dark fruits and scorched earth, the nose soars; the palate is still crazy young at 20 years and wrapped up in the oak yet. It's anybody's guess as to when this is fully ready to go. Score reserved.

This was a pop and pour during a party so I couldn't take any notes, but this was stunning. Soaring nose, expansive on the palate and an amazing lingering finish. Much silkier than my last bottle (in 2006), but still so, so young with significant tannin. Crazy, but oh so good!

Incredible deep colour, lively, no brown; first day missing some balance, in the nose some dark fruit, but mainly lots of wood and vanilla, chunky taste, very powerful and severe tannins. The second day (after a night in the fridge) the wine showed more bouquet with a far better balance between dark fruit and elegant (although still prominent) vanilla, a taste with cocoa, firm, also smooth, juicy, till the long and a bit hefty aftertaste with firm, but quite edible …

Broken cork and I felt the wine was drying out somewhat. The fruit and tannins were not in balance. Dark, cedar and earth aromas and palate but a bit rigid.

I want to like this wine more than I do. In younger days it projected far more promise than it now exhibits. Dark fruits on the nose; licorice and wood aromas fight with the alcohol for space. I don't see a long decant dramatically changing this, but worth a try. On the palate, tannins and blackberry predominate while I am left with black tea and coffee on the backend with neither lasting very long or being particularly satisfying. Could it …

Very dark with plum skin, espresso, raw oak, licorice, concentrated. Large-framed and full of substance but clunky and all hard edges. It could be that this needs 5-10 more years for my palate.

CDP and Spain, Plus Whites (Rincon 38, Mpls, MN) : Dark purple/red color. PNP, drank 1 glass over an hour. If I'm reading my notes right, it says, "big ass wine"...Blackberry, blackberry liqueur, dark cherry, oak . The palate is dense and chewy, blackberry, cassis, black cherry, concentrated, full bodied, firm drying tannins, oak, the alcohol shows some on the finish. Some sharp edges from the oak and alcohol detract.

Unexpected, extremely dark without brown tinges. Rich taste, profound and prolonged aftertaste with blackberries lingering. unfortunately, my last bottle.... The wine looks purple colored. The legs are medium. There is light sediment in the bottle. The body is full. The wine finishes long. The wine has medium acidity.

Mature, complex, soft integrated tannins. Hard to complain about anything here. Reminded me of the 1996 Lynch Bages that I tasted a few years back.

Spanish Whites and Reds Offline (Rincon 38, Mpls, MN) : Very dark/purple color. Drank1 glass over an hour. This was spicy, smoky, a little heat that blows off the nose, kirsch, blackberry liqueur, oak. The palate is deep and concentrated, blackberry liqueur, black cherry, smoky, licorice, glycerin, oak. The tannins are round and prominent, there is a little heat showing on the late palate and finish. This was getting better in the glass. 91+pts.

A deep and sound colour, a decent creamy nose and than a wine that still needs some years of ripening? Yes, there is a robust character, but at the end the wine shows a lot of alcohol.

From 75cl, decanted 90 minutes and consumed over the following two hours. This massively concentrated tête de cuvée is so viscous it clings to the glass. Strongly alcoholic (14,5%), its furry tannins are some 3-4 years off resolving and currently dominate what feels like a closed iron fist of dark berry fruit. Very long, tannic, raw-leather finish. I regret to say I preferred the basic Mauro 2001 when I tried it about 6 months ago. Try again in about 5 …

Bottle was amazing, just started to open up at 3.5 hours decanted. Unfortunately, it was mostly gone by that point. The next few will be aged for a good long while. Very brooding at this time, hinting at a lot that's waiting to come out.

CaliCab's Offline (CT) : My WOTN but could have been better with a proper decant. Powerful nose full with complex dark fruits, mocha, smoke and tobacco. Med/Full body with powerful but harnessed tannins. More of the dark cherry as expected from the nose along with a beef jerky component, almonds and a touch of sweet vanilla. Good acidity that keeps it racing along with a memorable finish.
