Dibbs' birthday : Colour showed more signs of age compared to the '02, palate showed a classic cool vintage character with restrained dark red fruit and some sous bois. I didn't think Mortet because it lacked the magic of the other Mortets that I've had before, but it's a good line-up when old Mortets turn out to be the weakest wines!

11th of 12, opened 90 minutes, perfect level, cork quarter stained, always a fine 01, this is losing none of its vigour, if not quite as stellar as last in 2019, lovely round, velvety, puissant Gevrey, plateau, 10+ years. F+ (18).

10th of 12, pnp, perfect cork and level - almost a wow, significant step up, proper beefy Burg, more on the black than red fruit, maybe not quite the precision or detail to the fruit as in my recent bottles of Vogue Amoureuses 99 or Rousseau Chambertin 2000, but a bottle of pure pleasure with wonderful energy to the fruit, yum. VF (18.5)…..what a fine winemaker the late great Denis was!

Denis Mortet Dinner. 2001 Lavaux and Champeaux (semi-blind) Mirror image of the 98's: Champeaux had cleaner acidity and was generally lighter and more expressive early on, while the Lavaux gained serious weight, structure, deeper fruits and grip.

Vanilla oak, herbs, stems, citrus and candied fruit. More power and grip on the palate compared to the Champeaux. But aging will bring the best out of it. I like Mortet's 2001 very much.

Colour as expected from an 18 year old burgundy. Slight petillance just noticeable on decanting. Quite dry, bare fruit, quite severe but some charm still evident. Perhaps going over the hill. Still enjoyable if you love the leanness of Burgundy.

In stunning shape right now. This is the last of a case. Needs at least an hour of air, perhaps two. Then take your time. It’s all black fruit, deep, rich and round. And still time ahead of it based on this performance. If only I had another case.

During a La Paulée lunch, so only brief impressions. Very good showing, dark fruit, elegant mouth feel, very good length.

9th of 12, opened 30 minutes, perfect cork and balance, back on form and rounder and more harmonious than June's bottle, more red fruit and nice sweetish mid palate, more pleasure than more acidic Conf-Cot. Suchots '96 on same night, though less fine and nuanced. Just F+ (18)........held up well when 2nd half drunk on 12/10/17 (having been decanted into a half bottle and recorked) and a tad nicer, as more a point than the reignots 99 drunk on same …

8th of 12, pnp, perfect cork and level, more balanced than last bottle, just a bit dull for Mortet, fruit lacking energy, nice sweetish mid palate though, plenty of life. Certainly F (17.5)....maybe suffered post Lafleur '99.....NB showing better a week later (half decanted into half bottle and recorked) with very attractive raspberry fruit on nose and palate, certainly F+ on this showing!

Pure pinot-juice here with the creamy exterior that reveals the modern approach, but this is very balanced , indeed, light, elegant, rich (much richer than the vintage itself) - it can certainly live on. #from HSA #LaBuca

7th of 12, as May note but showing more black fruit, meat and volatile acidity, slightly too high toned. Fine just (17.5/20).

Medium/deep garnet core, pale garnet/mahogany rim. Lovely, aromatic nose, sweet damson fruit, underlying strawberry, floral notes, just a hint of sesame but not obtrusive. Medium/full, soft, silky tannins, sweet dark fruit, layered, generous, good balancing acids, very good length harmonious finish. Very Mortet, but in balance and very enjoyable. Excellent, drinking now but no need to hurry.

6th of 12, opened 30 minutes but not decanted - not showing quite so well as last October's note (possibly affected by long journey), but in essence the same though showing more marked red fruit (cherries and red currant) components. Fine (17.5/20). NB March bottle flawed and slightly fizzy!

Deep cherry red. Immediate nose of dark cherries, plum, hung game and earth. Complex and evolving in the glass. Mid weight palate with great density and drive. Finishes with long palate with that game and earth framing the dark berries and stone fruit characters. Delicious and finally open for business after a sulky adolescence.

4th of 12, not decanted, drunk over 2 days and better on second - fullish plummy red, little development; attractive bouquet, meaty, plummy, quite complex; fullish, grip, persistent, quality, mat fruit, quite complex, mature, but may still improve. Fine plus (18/20).

Another Casual Burgundy Dinner (RPM Italian - Chicago IL) : Served alongside the 1998 vintage. Lots of dense black fruit with lots of enticing spice, just a bit of new oak that still needs to integrate. Also powerful and vibrant flavors, long and powerful , just now entering its peak drinking window.
