Cape Mentelle, Trinders Cabernet Merlot, Margaret River

Opened and poured rather casually on a midweek evening without much expectation having recalled being underwhelmed by a previous bottle but was pleasantly surprised to find a wine more reminiscent of earlier memories of this wine, rather like a ripe Claret with a hint of something Oz, perhaps mint/eucalyptus? Will try to update from night 2.

Nose of beautiful eucalyptus trees, gummy, I have sensed some decaying leaves with a hint of some very spicy red fruits, very interesting! Somewhat deep red in colour, watery hue in orange! Fully mature, smooth on the palate, exotic fruits, not a complex one but soothing! Should give it a point or two higher but sadly there is a bit of heat on the finish! Drink now or hold for a couple more years!

Open the bottle, pour one glass, and leave the rest for day 2. Compelling nose, good complex palate. Medium length.

Oh this is liquid luxury! Cape Mentelle extol this as Margaret River's nod to the famous Bordeaux blend. Halliday agreed, bestowing an impressive 96 points on this Cab Sauv (60%), Merlot (26%), Cab Franc (8%) and Petit Verdot (6%) blend, saying a "beautifully structured and balanced wine". 2009 vintage

Light nose of graphite, black fruit, and a touch of finger lime. Palate has a light, fresh entry with crunchy acidity, then gradually-building tannin and astringency. Flavours of black fruit, fresh lime, and pencil shavings.

2012 vintage

Berried, curranty, chocolatey goodness. Dust and dried herbs add a savoury twist. Still primary but mellowed. Tannin builds with air. Medium bodied at most. Spot on balance. Extra point for persistence.

2009 vintage

{screwcap, 13.5%} Gentle nose of plum and red berry fruits. Soft dusty tannins carry mild herb-like flavours, with plenty of washed-out Australian merlot character. Fairly low acid; medium-bodied. Not great depth of fruit; this is a little thin, even for a modest wine. Quaff.

A pretty, but slightly confectionery nose of violets, boiled lollies and a savoury aspect hard to pin down...possibly beetroot. Too young to be anywhere near approaching it's peak at the moment, however the overall impact at present is a little disappointing. Red fruits are to the fore, backed by a pleasing base of tannin. Really nice Margaret River Cab/Merlot. Light body, easy drinker, light red fruits. Easy.

Deep red colour. Violets and tobacco on the nose. Mulberry and chocolate in the mouth. Really nice, med-long finish. Nice wine.

This was really nice. Popped and poured at a BYO and it was beautiful from beginning to end. While I don't have much background with Bordeaux, this one reminded me of some I've had. It had quite a bit of power and fruit, yet it was balanced and interesting across the palette.

{cork, 14.5%} Solid garnet. Lovely MR nose of graphite and black olives, with a touch of British Racing Green (if you can imagine smelling that!) Still solidly fruity on the palate, wonderfully varietal without betraying its origins. Tannins have softened somewhat, alcohol doesn’t protrude, and the finish is weighty without being clumsy. A very endearing wine, not profound, but immensely enjoyable.

Drunk at Crackers Hut with the Brewers pre Twitch 2007. Cork indicated a bit spoiled, but wine was FINE, Grena rated it wine of the nite - mind you he was totally brewed by then

Deep looking/ full body/ intense nose, smoke and ripe fruit, hint of oak/ fine mouthfeel, ripe violets!! /ultra ripe tannins, smooth finish 14.5% 18/20

WS definitely did not have the same bottle that I did, or perhaps this just benefited greatly from age. Reminded me of a well-aged Bordeaux. Awesome, and I only wish that I had more.

this will be an outstanding wine, but give it time. suffered at first from sloppy wine-making with a heavy aroma of sulphur. Couple of jugs later and a bit of wine on the carpet, there wer aromas of chocolate, liquorice; very young tannins that gripped the tougue, but lots of lovely fruit with long finish. leave for at least another 5 years
