Always a pleasure to come back to a well aged Madiran from arguably the finest estate in the region. It was farmed from 30 year old vines, aged in new oak for 16 months. Deep ruby colour. Intense aroma of barnyard, tar, blackberries, earth, vanilla, smoke, tobacco, cassis. Medium+ body, concentrated and broad yet feels elegant and restrained with incredibly balanced 12.5% abv, juicy black fruits with smoky tar notes, finely grained grippy high tannins.

Hang on, this actually did get better. I was recently revisiting some wine that slept in the cellar for quite some time, and then I came across this bottle. It actually is still quite tense and tannic, but the cow dunk retreated a bit showed some polished cherry notes below. It ends with good acidity, but this exceeds the poor finish. No balance. 87 points. After 24 hours spices more pronounced, intense stable notes. more length. Upgrade to 88+.

In eerste instantie leek deze wijn nog veel te jong, met een overvloed aan tannines. Na 5 dagen open laten staan was de wijn getransformeerd, onherkenbaar. Veel beter dan de 1997, zelfs de 1996 en de 1990. Wat een klasse. Nog zeker een jaar of 5 laten liggen...

A great wine at its peak. I've always been a great fan of Alain Brumont's wines, especially the great vintages of the '90s. 1998 Prestige cuvée was probably the most impresive "tour de force" with the 1990 "36 mois". The wine was intense, with the very typical barnyard, leathery aroma. Great length. Probably my last experience with this wine...Drink now or enjoy within 3-4 years.

For those who think that tannat is best applied as a wood stain, this wine certainly shows how a well- aged and well made Madiran can provide great enjoyment, particularly with excellent cheese after softer wines.
