No detailed tasting notes here, but much like the 1978 I had in Hong Kong previously, these old Veuve wines really do age marvellously. One of my secret hopes to come out of the grower champagne movement is that people stop going after bottles like these. Still remarkably fresh, muted salmon colour instead of advanced brownness. Acidity held up very well, you might almost say tangy but was just too reserved for it. Not something that you should drink alongside …

3L bottle. Drank at a holiday event with a lot of other vintage champagne so my palate wasn’t as fine-tuned as it should have been. This was showing very well! There were some bubbles still on it but less than effervescent. Very rich on the mouth with a fair bit of nuttiness, both toasted and candied, mostly hazelnut. A distinct syrupy-marmalade fruit character, an almost candy-like berry fruit as well to go with some bruised citrus and ripe stone fruit. …

France Trip: Paris, Champagne, Burgundy; 9/3/2023-9/17/2023 (Paris, Champagne, Burgundy) : Light gold color. Drank a glass over an hour at Veuve Cliquot. Disgorged 2008. Nose, flint, fume, a little dull at first, then pain grille, truffle, sous bois, grilled pear; the palate takes on weight in glass, chesse cloth, liqueured, quince, dried apricot, apple paste, ocean, oxidative, rive stone. This was interesting, pretty much flat now in terms of bubbles, but very vinous and like white burg it opened up …

Out of Magnum: Quite mature but overall a solid champagne. Tertiary notes are present but the bubbles help to keep the freshness. Good food Champagne. Drink up as it will not improve

(Disgorged in October 2008, 56% Pinot Noir, 11% Meunier and 33% Chardonnay, dosage 4 gr/l) Delicious golden yellow colour with an endless stream of very fine bubbles and a wonderful maturity showing butterscotch, figs and citrus flowers in a very pleasant way. Smoothing lemon acidity combined with some brown butter and lengthy balanced finish showing a lime bitterness. Wow! This has really evolved with the extra decade of post-disgorgement time and show no signs of decline coming soon.. (Best 2010-2025)

Past it’s prime, certainly, but it has developed some interesting characteristics. The color was orange with sherry notes on both the bouquet and the palate.

(Disgorged 2011) Complex, toasty nose. Red fruit, nuts and just about right oxidative notes adding complexity. Dark chocolate and good depth. Full, rich and balanced. Lovely fruit. Raspberries, dark chocolate and roasted nuts. Surprising strong showing! Mature and fresh!

Delicious but it seemed to have gone flat . . Should have gotten to this one a few years ago. Maybe a characteristic of rose's?

Our last of 3 magnums also bottled in October 2008. Consistent once again if not gained a bit more respect as this time it was framed by Dom 2004 (Papies 94)and Pol Roger Winston Churchill 2000 ( Papies 92) Soft and well round, rich toasty feel, very vines as always but with a vitality and energy that made the PR feel a bit lacking. Silky and a beautiful experience as always. 93-94

Saturday night at The Papies (The Papies, Elizabeth St, London) : One of 3,576 Magnums disgorged in October 2008. Almost 4 years since we had this last ( Papies 93 ) and remains true to form. Soft, very vinous, round with light bubbles. Very much alive though and has a lovely presence and nice complexity. Toasty richness from nose to finish. Very good especially for lovers of well aged champagne. 93

Disgorged Oct 08. Purchased in Reims at Veuve. Perfect balance, good finish, much more approachable then your typical high end wine given the age. Still wine like, similar to a fine Montrachet. Given the age and quantities, a great value. In prime, will continue to develop and hold for a long time.

From magnum. I could have scored this higher, and it benefits from food due to the cutting acidity. Lovely bright gold. Needs a fair bit of air to develop the toast which elevated the wine. Front end is very acidic (all lemons and tart green apple), mid-palate is rich with air, but it never developed the back-end and white flower aromatics I love in mature great champagne. Very mineral finish. Few signs of bubbles, but a nice fine mousse in …

Gaja Charity Dinner & Tasting for HealthServe (Taberna, Bukit Merah) : From a magnum, this was very good, but somehow rather more backward and less impressive than a 750ml I had last year. It did have the same lovely nose though, with a touch of fresh herb sprinkled over yellow lemons and fleshy red apple aromas. The palate came across very youthful, all super fresh and lively, with pure, juicy but rather primary notes of lemons and apples and just …

(Disg. 2008.) Did not appeal to me. Out of balance with cognac notes on the nose and grape fruit in the finish. Flawed? Possibly, but in light of my previous bottle 3-4 months ago, think it is more a matter time running out for this wine. First 1990 fizz I have actually shared with my zink. I was that disappointed. 89-90

Lovely mature champagne, although it did not entirely win me over as I had hoped. Got a sense that it was slightly over the hill, however it should still hold together nicely for some time. Possibly not a perfect bottle. I will have my final bottle within 2015 so not to miss out, which is a few years earlier than what I had expected from other reviews. Added 14/07/15: Another bottle, which was way off balance. Now think my previous …

Pre Christmas Dinner at The Ledbury (The Ledbury, London) : From Magnum. Oct 2008 Disgorgement date. Excellent wine and a lot better than the one we tried a year and half ago. Fresh and vibrant still yet well evolved and matured. Rich, toasty nose and really enjoyable. Elegant and balanced and this is for the lovers of aged champagne. Beautiful 93-94

Was expecting something else... something more... No toffee... no strong autolytic yeasty goodness... Medium acidity... sweetish, slightly oxidised sherry notes. I dont think this bottle would have gotten any better with time. I enjoyed this bottle and the novelty of it beeing almost 25 years old, but the price of 200$+ is not worth it. Prefered the late disgorged Moet Grand Vintage Collection 1990 and especially the 1995!

Friday night wines at Thierry's place (Wellington, New Zealand) : Colour deep gold. Served in Montrachet glasses. Good persistent mousse, fine bead. A complex bouquet of leesy, autolysis aromas, with notes of lemon, almond croissant, peach and blanched almonds. Quite a bright nose of ripe fruit for this age. Some vanilla oak aromas, but not overdone. In a Champagne flute, the bready, autolysis aromas were emphasised. On the palate, oxidative but with relatively bright fruit (tasters were picking it as …

Birthday Dinner (2) 2014 (Jade Palace, Forum Galleria, Singapore) : Aged on lees in Veuve Cliquot’s cellars for 15-20 years and disgorged in October 2008, this was a lovely aged Champagne. It had a beautifully matured nose, with aromas of honey and caramel and roasted nuts wreathed around a core of lemon and appley cider and Calvados notes. It was still very fresh in the mouth, with lively acidity and just a hint of fine mousse still enlivening the palate. …

- Yellow gold color with small pearls and aromas of lemon, apple, honey, coffee and baker's yeast. It's balanced and has flavours of almond and lemon with a medium body. Round texture with a long finish - If the finish can be as good as the front and mid palate, that would be a nearly perfect wine.

Confirming my previous impressions: that 20years+ veuve clicquot rosé provides reliably splendid wine. This bottlle was true to the vintage, perhaps not in the best way with primary plump fruit dominating the still high toned nose. Will probablly better in just a few years once the tertiary aromas of wood etc come to the fore. Not as good as 1989, but not too far off either.

Dinner at St. Jacques. Orange-copper in color with a light mousse and very tiny bubbles. This has a big nose filled with citrus peel, a little biscuit and shellfish, and some strawberry honey. Racy acidity on the palate but a nicely balanced wine. Long finish. To me this wine is at peak today. 50+13+12+8.5+8.5 = 92
