PnP and there is a lot going on initially - herbs (lavender and rosemary) on the nose, dark fruits up front, and oak influences (chocolate, vanilla, and coffee) on the finish- but its all a bit disjointed. With about 45 minutes of air this really comes together. The herbs and oak influences subside, and leave a beautiful red fruited wine with striking earthy and mineral flavors.

From memory - full bodied, dominated by dark fruit and earthy tannins showing grittiness in the back-end. Quite tasty, but not as refined and lush as the reserve bottling.

Last of my '02's. This Spring Mountain producer always supplies excellent wines at reasonable prices. The '02 is absolutely delicious right now and I would say at it's peak. PaP. the wine is a beautiful dark garnet with no bricking and no cloudiness. The wine is showing beautiful fruit on the nose and the palate. Let is breathe in decanter for an hour and a bomb! Deep rich red fruit emerges and the tannins are balanced just right. Looks like another 1-2 years to peak!

This is drinking very well right now. Dark mountain fruit with nose of black cherry, black currant and smoky oak. Well balanced on the palate with black fruit and hints of vanillin that ended with a smooth easy finish. Nice surprise.

With family during their visit July 26th. Needs time to warm up and open up when taking out of the cooler probably about an hour at least. Nice bottle of wine. Made in a way which demands at least 4 years of cellaring from date of harvest, this wine has softened nicely, revealing a core of currant, orange peel, and blackberry, with some new wood, and a moderate finish. Lacked layers of complexity which would have argued for a higher score. Still, this wine is a great effort, and one of the lesser known gems of Spring Mountain.

A perfectly nice little wine, but without particular distinction. Nice currants, blackberry and a bit of oak go down smoothly, with soft supple tannins. Not very complex--what you get in the first 15 seconds is what you get. and not much of a finish.

Unrevealing nose. More than anything this wine came across as light. It was slightly sharp upon opening, but settled down within a few minutes. Good dark fruit flavors, but the relatively weak mouthfeel was a letdown. I would much rather have a Cab Franc from Guilliams than this.

Guilliams Winery Visit and Tasting (Spring Mountain, Napa Valley, CA) : Spring Mountain fruit aromas jump from the glass. Purple color hints at the extracted mountain fruit. Layered flavors of blackberry, black cherry, currant and vanilla are balanced by young firm tannins. Tasty, lingering finish.
