Domaine Jean Grivot Nuits St. Georges Aux Lavières

Darker translucent ruby. Harmonious, silky nose of lilting black violets, raspberry, damp cellar, forest floor, faint iron. Layers of beautifully pure, focused black cherry and red raspberry fruit on the satiny palate cut with crushed stone, briar, and integrated fine ferric particles. Bright acidity and gentle, smoothed tannin. Long finish of echoing red fruit and iron-inflected earth. This is NSG? Such a lyrical wine.

Unmistakably Grivot Muted earthy nose medium tannins, min acidity concetrated red fruit, cherries. Beautiful balance. Will be even better in years to come.

Ruby with little fading. Ripe dark fruit and menthol on the nose. Medium weight, quite sappy with light underpinning of oak. Smoky black cherry and a little blueberry with excellent acidity, meatiness, a bit of soil, and unobtrusive tannins. This has developed beautifully toward almost full maturity. It has a roundness and harmony that really sets it apart from many 2006 wines and has exceeded the expectations I had for it when drinking a bottle 6 years ago.

A good but not great rendition from this vineyard. Starts a little dull, but with air gains precision. The earthy flavors and smooth texture typical of Boudots with good depth. At full maturity, but no rush to drink. Label says Aux Boudots, cork says Les Boudots. Cellared since original release.

Medium ruby. Nose of dark berry, violets, underbrush, damp cellar, earth. Black raspberry, iron filings, briar, and craggy stony notes on the linear but supple palate. Nicely acidic with firm tannin and a medium length finish of sleek dark fruit, lovely grip, and iron. Definitely from NSG. Just entering its drinking window and quite delicious.

Dark red, concentrated visual aspect. Still somewhat primary with clear notes of elevage, the nose is built around black fruits. Palate is very easy going, easily drunk but still quite primary. Medium-high bodied.

Coravin tasting. Very good. Some maturity. Still plenty of fruit but becoming quite earthy now. Very good with a medium-rare fillet steak although seemed more mature and earthy. Slightly short finish. On its own after and much better. I think it's slightly overpowered by the charring on the outside of the steak. It mutes it. Much more complex afterwards. Pop n' Pour and enjoyed over a couple of hours. This is still pretty tight and structured. The Vosne-ish northern NSG character (black cherry, spice) is there but not yet pronounced. Leaner fruit needs time to flesh out and integrate with the structure. Hold for 5+ years.

Ruby throughout. Nose of tart cherry and some stems. Medium weight, woody base, fairly tannic to start. The dark red fruit sweetened and was joined by orange peel, a strong vein of soil, and ground coffee at the end. This was excellent, progressing well, and promises another 6 or 7 years of positive development. Its slight chunkiness speaks both of Nuits and the vintage.

Clear rim, bricking eating a cm or so into the wine. Lovely nose of violets, cherry, leather and a wisp of smoke. Tannins are pretty much resolved, but there's still just a touch to catch on the tip of the tongue and give it a some texture, ripe dark cherry flavour, leather and earthiness, bags of acidity. Jean Grivot Nuits St. Georges and Clos Vougeot (Arlequin Wine Merchant, San Francisco) : Ruby core with some lightening. Immediately richer, riper feel than the 2007. Fairly dense black fruit, some char and spice, round tannins, and a long finish. This is excellent with plenty of material but is a bit blockish and simple right now. It could definitely improve and hopefully gain more complexity with more time in the bottle.

Very tight, with dark raspberries, minerals, earth. After two hours still would not open up. Very tart and tannic now and needs substantial time in cellar.

Crimson coloured. In the nose, it feels a bit disjointed - dried fruit and flowers, not very fresh, just very slightly jammy, alcohol sticks out. On the palate, it's on the mineral side, quite tight, again with some alcohol sticking out. Drying tannins. Maybe not a bood bottle.

Compared this from the Riedel vinum, sommelier, and Zalto. Best from the sommelier; Vosne spice, stemmy raspberry and blackberry, a hint of musk and smoke. The Vinum was similar but with less grandeur and the Zalto pulled apart the component parts (highlighting mineral and red fruit) but by virtue of doing so didn't manage to convey the excellent and cohesive whole picture. Interesting tasting windows here (2012-2019) because I think this is just coming into maturity.

Clear, garnet red, lighter rim, orange-brick rim. Clean nose, medium intensity, red fruits, violets, leather. Medium palate, notable acidity and tannins, not yet fully integrated, similar flavours to the nose, quite a dry finish. Medium length. I think this needs more time, but I wonder if it will come round before it loses its fruit.

Very good. Quite tight on palate but still as open and ready as you would expect for a 2006. Lovely sweet red fruit, some earthiness, great acidity. A typical French food wine. Plenty of life left in this.

Nice concentration, bright and linear with menthol, ripe cranberry and Vosne spice notes. Fine grained tannin and persistence. A long future is ahead of this one. Beautiful.

Nice and powerful nose. A bit too acid at the beginning but as the night went along the acidity stopped to attack the palate and we were able to get to the wine. Nice little red fruit and a bit of spice, but sadly no show of earthiness which what i enjoy most in a pinot noir. The others at the table on the other hand thoroughly enjoyed the wine !

Lighter colour with a real transparency at the rim. Nose very appealing. Moreish, savoury with some mace and warming spice along with what I think others describe as cherry. Tasted sharp at first then settled to a "brightness" as the glass unwound. Not as much depth as I hoped although it has a depth of flavours my palatte cannot place although I'm sure I'm getting boot polish (or the brush, at least) in there. I think I was expecting more …

Initially more acid than anything. After an hour or so it mellows more and red fruit starts to show, more red currants. It draws on the front of the mouth but, perhaps oddly, has good length. Not sure that this would massively improve with age but I would give it at least 2 more years before broaching the next one.

This is one serious big Boudots that is closed up but still showing its power. Racy dark fruits with lots of power emerged quickly in medium long finish that was classic in every way. I really like the winemaking style at this Domaine and will wait at least another 10+ years to open any more bottles.

I always found Grivot a little rough and unfriendly but had heard they had made great strides forward in recent years, so I decided to check this one out.
