Mag. Decanted for over eight hours, sampling along the way in hopes it would eventually open up. Never did. I cannot imagine it is that super tight. There was nothing to write home about in the bottle I cracked. Dark fruit and blah. Not flawed. Disappointed at the qpr.

Year end tasting (Marmion Bar, Frankfurt) : Glass: Zalto Burgundy Clear, deep ruby color. Nose was quite muted and not overly complex. On the palate you can feel the high, 14% abv. It is very powerful and warm. Not very elegant. Good structure and texture. Medium+ length. Might gain finesse and complexity with 10+ years of bottle age. 92+

A well made wine, smooth and balanced, needs an hour in a decanter to open up what little complexity it has. Deep down there’s cherry and wood, rich and full bodied, but is it tight or just uncomplicated? Try again in 2026.

A rich, somewhat unique style of Corton, retaining the King-like dark red/black fruit and powerful yet restrained presence with hints of complex sinews with few actually emerging. Served to a group with a light lightly sauced and truffle-laden dish, its smoother, almost Hermitage side came forward, with rich 2009 fruit, a less meaty leas than usual Corton, and a full finish. Slo ox’d but not decanted.

Corton and Beaux-Monts Dinner (Paradise Teochew, Scotts Square) : A pretty good wine indeed, but this suffered tremendously from being served next to a knockout bottle of 2010 DRC Corton, which was far more charming, and far more ready to drink. Still though, a very solid Corton in its own right. It had a really lovely nose, full of red cherries and berries, roses, a little earthy spice - almost as attractive as that on the beautiful DRC. The palate …

Medium bodied, dark fruits. Not much floral aroma but expected since it is a Corton. Still holding well with soft tannins. Easy drink but otherwise, did not leave much impression.

(Decanted for two hours.) Served by a friend. It has been over five years since I had this wine. Looking at my notes I find it retains its impressively dark color. The nose is less exuberant than previously noted, though there are ample fruit, earth and barnyard aromas to get and keep your attention. In the mouth the wine is formidably sized and decidedly medium bodied. There are generous red fruit, soil and herb flavors, with a pronounced streak of …

The nose is ferrous and slightly feral (in a good way). Plenty of meat and musk. Good drive in the mouth with a long, lingering finish, showing a distinctive licorice character.

Charleston Offlineorama V; 11/7/2019-11/10/2019 (The Holy City) : There is an stewed medicinal quality in this wine which I find quite off-putting. Perhaps it has seen a little heat? Or is it just a Ponsot red? Some bitter spiciness gives it some interest.

Charleston V - the wooden anniversary; 11/6/2019-11/10/2019 (Charleston, SC (various locations)) : My first impression was almost a touch medicinal. With some time that blew off a bit more and then it was black currant and darker fruits and more of a dried fruit character. Very light and clearly well made. Could use more years.

Corton vs Corton : Way too young, but attractive and pleasing in its own way. The nose had nice notes of herb and spice floating about sweet red-fruited aromas, these lightly influenced by a touch of new oak at the sides. The palate had a really nice purity and precision to it, with red and blue fruits lined with a bit of spice and a solid mineral spine that led into a really long finish. There was a really nice …

Tuesday Night Double Blind $60+ (Alpharetta, GA) : Bright pinkish ruby; intense floral and strawberries, great core of cherry, lighter and elegant with firm mineral spine; spicy core of fruit and mineral on the palate, young; needs lots of air if opening now; delicious.

(Decanted two hours.) It has been nearly two years since I drank this wine. It still has an amazingly dark red/blue color that looks more like Californian cabernet than French pinot noir. With much coaxing, it delivers up rich aromas of dark berries, strawberries, mocha, funk and menthol. There is also a pleasing perfumed floral note that adds another layer of complexity and interest. Full-bodied, it has a rich and ripe mouthfeel but without a trace of sweetness. The correspondingly …

(Decanted for three hours.) Frankly, I was expecting a great deal more. Despite a promising dark color, the nose is so dumb that even aggressive swirling does little to unlock anything beyond somewhat muted fruit. In the mouth, there is indeed ripe fruit but it is laced with piercing acidity and harsh tannins. The ripe fruit suggests that there might be a good wine hiding in there somewhere but I would not bet on it. I think this is a …

My second bottle of this wine and my previous assessment holds. This is a brooding giant of a red Burgundy. Dark, dark color. Very reticent scents of fruits, flowers and soil. Gloriously big yet supremely elegant flavors. Long, saline finish that invites you to take another sip. Super now but will be even better in, say, ten years.

Top Burgundy Tasting at the Sotto Lounge. (Netherlands) : Complex nose of red and black cherries and lovely soil tones. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, very pure and sappy, with beautiful focus and a balanced long finish. This exceptional Corton has great elegance and power!

BYOB Diner @ Restaurant De Eendracht (Rotterdam, Netherlands) : Hands down winner of the “most surprising wine of the day” award, its nose was borderline jammy but not quite, thanks to an infusion of cretaceous minerals. Lushly textured (!!) on the medium-plus bodied mid-palate, where veritable buckets of sève buffer its structure into oblivion and I doubt whether anyone would be able to guess its origins in a blind tasting. Of course, the 14% alcohol would most likely prohibit one …

This wine is unusually dark by the standards of Burgundy. It is a deep, dense, purple ruby. It is so saturated with color that it appears as “black as Egypt’s night” and is reminiscent of a young Châteauneuf-du-Pape or Napa cabernet. And this depth of color extends all the way to the blushing meniscus. Still a very young wine: even after a long decanting the nose remains dumb, reticent and brooding. With considerable swirling, it finally yields a complex bouquet …

Deeper and richer nose, color and body than the 2007 VV clos de la Roche. This is really a powerful burgundy. Deep pitched red and blue fruit which will need time to really come together.
