Dark red, good acidity, this has a beautiful lingering sweetness, earthy tones, flavours of black and red fruits, spice and floral scents. Tannins pop upon the back of the palate as a moderate oak taste. Needs more time for the tannins to integrate and allow the wine to soften . Excellent wine.

Top notch syrah. Part of its charm is the traditional style: finessed, not oaky, not forced. So Old-World. Textbook Northern-Rhone, spicy, medium plus-bodied and tight. Dried black cherries, black currents, black pepper on the nose, and some green peppercorn – a suggestion of fermentation with whole bunches. Sinewy and a bit unforgiving at this stage, it has masses of chewy tannins. Decanting is recommended, it gets more approachable with airing, and actually it’s quite enjoyable already for its sheer power …

Commanderie des Costes du Rhone - Spring 2023 Kick-off (Gabriel Kruether) : Also a not quite perfect bottle although drinkable. Sad because this might have been the wine that I was most looking forward to. Love the producer and '91 is an excellent year. Hints of barnyard funk to it.

This is drinking so well right now, dark fruit, a BBQ ribs sort of meatiness, herbs - potent yet not heavy, still with grippy tannin. 94-95

Carafé une heure. Très costaud - beau et complexe certes mais trop jeune, ce qui n’est pas une surprise. J’entrevois un bel avenir à ce vin avec un peu de patience donc la note potentielle est certainement plus élevée.

This is a very cool wine for sure. Quite savory, lots of meat and black pepper notes. Acidity is quite pleasing, and the fruit is still going strong despite fading a bit on the finish.

I want to add this to balance my note on the loathsome 2012 - I want to provide testimony to show I am a true Rostywallah. Colour is medium red-purple, vibrant and with only a little fading at meniscus. A promising start. This bottle was fully mature and after some of the funk blew off, it showed a very elegant, complex finish with notes of dark cherry and spices with just a hint of smoke. I'm not sure I could've identified this as Cote Rotie in a blind tasting which is not a plus in my book but it is a finely complex wine.

Acker Rene Rostaing Cote Rotie Retrospective (1978 - 2005) (NY) : Dusty leather nose. Leathery taste. Showing the age of the vintage. Some liked it but not to my taste.

One of the best wines of the en primeur tasting. Seriously big dark nose, big bodied, tannic, huge length of finish. Top end wine that will need a decade to come around.

Jamet and Rostaing at the Harwood Arms (Harwood Arms, Fulham) : Medium garnet core, pale garnet rim. Initially shows a mustiness with blows off in half an hour or so. Still a touch reticent though but starting to show dark fruit, notes of bacon. Medium/full on the palate, quite stern, dense, savoury, a touch reticent, spice, showing quite a firm backbone and perhaps a touch constricted in the finish. More interesting than loveable.

La Tablee: Celebratory Dinner (BYO) (26 Bridge Street, Brooklyn) : Nice age. Nice acid. Very fresh. Somehow missing some of the robustness that I get from the La Landonnes though. It's still tasty.

Wow this was drinking really beautifully and so fun to try. Nose of dark fruits and spice. On the palate this has soft dark and red fruits, savory olives and meaty notes, earth, leather and a long finish. Silky and savory - in a great spot for drinking - just lovely!

Intronization into Rhone (Riverpark) : Wow was this singing. It is animal in a glass. And intense. A vibrant wine if you were. One that kindof grabs you right from the beginning and shake you around a bit. Need to be comfortable with the savory. I think there might be fruit there, but it's overpowered with all of the blood and meat and I swear there might even be claws in the mix. Really enjoyable though.

Had the first bottle with BurgNick in May this year, which was funky and not impressive. The second bottle I had this week was very good, I was so surprised how nice it performed, with dark olives, spices, aged Cuban cigar, and very meaty and dark fruits, so many things happened on the nose, on the palate, it was dynamics with very dark fruits and some mushroom, forest floor, leather, and tobacco. Tannin was round and firm.

Earthy, funky and rustic with secondary note like tea leaf, iron and fading dark fruit on the palate. Based on this bottle, it is drinking beyond peak.

Paired with ‘91 La Mouline it was already at a disadvantage but this showed quite well and was very correct and refined vs. the exotic La Mouline. There is more fruit here with lovely notes of black cherry and smoky spices and a very silky ethereal texture. Finishes taut and complex with classic notes of charred meats, violet spice and minerals. This actually seems like it needs more time but is still a beautiful, authentic Cote Rotie. Whereas the bottle a few months ago was too pristine and youthful for its own good this came across well developed with age. Dusty leather and dried red berries on the nose. Mild smoke and scorched earth terroir. Very rustic. Sweet red and blackberry fruit on the palate. Dry and dusty. Tannins mostly melted in. Rare Cote-Rotie Dinner ('91, '88, '83) (Blue Hill (NYC)) : Again this is reading younger with sweet blue berry fruit on the nose. A baked blueberry pie. A little wildness on here too. Palate is straightforwardly bold and blue. Meaty. This bottle was not from the Rostaing sellers like the '91, but was equally as youthful and fresh.

Rare Cote-Rotie Dinner ('91, '88, '83) (Blue Hill (NYC)) : Bold red and black berry fruit nose with pronounced spice. More robust fruit than earth influence than the rest of the ‘91 flight. Lush and opulent on the palate. Hedonistic drinking, bold. This bottle was from the domaine's cellar, and was accordingly a particularly youthful and fresh showing.

Some Wine Tasted at the Zachys Auction; 10/27/2017-10/28/2017 (Charlie Palmer Steak - Washington, DC) : Small glass, brief note. More black vs red fruit with bacon, licorice and black pepper. Still a bit tannic, so balance is good if not perfect. Very good now, but I still think there is upside.

Very interesting Côte Roti. Excellent balance, very minerally. Earthy but clean. Difficult to describe the flavors yet satisfying. Probably at peak now but will hold. The test glass evolved into a floral beauty at home after several hours, so maybe a long decant would have been useful.

Had this side-by-side with a 1999 Cote Blonde, a 2001 Beaucastel Hommage a Jacques Perrin and a 1999 Guigal La Mouline. This was the standout winner - by a long shot. Beautiful, silky, rich and tasty. This wine has some life to it still and could last another 5-9 years easily. Expensive? Yes. Worth it? You bet!

Superlative. Energetic, vibrant and incredibly exciting Cote Rotie. Gorgeous, intense fruit. This has 5-6 years left before you hit more secondary layers. Needs about 3 hrs of air to show full qualities as quite tight for first 1.5 hrs. Excellent with rack of lamb.

Beautiful mature Cote Rotie. Actually the best Cote Rotie i've had to date. You still get some of that Northern Rhone meatiness but with some sweet red fruit and a touch of pepper. Some folks around the table described this as "hedonistic Piedmonte". Entering the peak of its drinking window. Very long and very lovely.
