Tasted vis-a-vis the 2012, this is by far superior. The vintage speaks, this is a cool cat, vertical, mineral, elegant, fresh. Bordeaux-like, if you will. Medium (+) ruby. Smells like black fruits, cedar, walnuts, dry leaves, soil, black tea, licorice. Full body, medium (+) acid and finish, with flavors of black fruits, lemon, and spice. Nice. Perfect with new years day wine braised pork shoulder with black eyed peas and collard greens.

Always pleasure to come back to one of my favourite RdD producers. A blend made from 85% Tempranillo, 10% CS and 5% Merlot, aged for 17 months in FR oak, 50% new. (Tasted after a 2 1/2 hour decant)....Very good. Our bottle still tasted young and primary, in fact, as if it had only just entered its primary drinking window. It can go for quite a long time. Principal flavors were black cherry and smoky oak.

Drank a bottle over three days of Zoom conference calls. It held up well to being recorked and sitting on my desk. Nice wine, some spice notes, medium body with a medium length finish. Stood up well to a New Orleans beans, rice and sausage dinner.

Smooth and rich with great dark fruits. Long finish with a great balance. Drinking great now and could evolve even more in the next couple of years.

Long time favorite. Black current and vanilla upon opening. Then double decanted and chambrée-ed. Now opening upon, with 15% no alcohol tast so well balanced. Tannins well integrated, not chewy rather smooth, in the nose: garigue, black fruit, haunting smell, lovely.

Red and black fruits, plum, milk chocolate, aniseed and liquorice, boiled beef, black pepper. Good, mouth-watering, acidity. Ripe but not overly. Dry with no excess sweetness. A little heat on inspection but wears its alcohol well overall. Opening and changing nicely through the evening. There was half a glass left overnight (in a small bottle). This showed that this is better now with some tannin restraining the ripeness than it will be once it is fully resolved.

Sehr seidige Tannine, schwarz fruchtig und konzentriert präsentiert sich der kleine Hacienda Monasterio. Der Alkohol (laut Etikett 15 %) ist wunderbar Eingebunden aber die Tabak und Teer Noten sind recht intensiv und ich denke am meisten Freude macht er zur Zeit mit einem kräftigen Essen. Sehr gut wie immer, so kennt man ihn.

First thought on first taste was that we opened it too soon as I'd hoped for more secondary development, but over the course of the hour or so it took us to consume it the oak became cumbersome and overall the wine got reductive such that I (gasp!) added a few drops of water to my last pour to liven it up. Glad it was our last bottle.

Drinking really well right now. Tart dark cherry, cedar, bramble and spice. Masculine, integrated and delicious.

Decanted and enjoyed with food. In the mid-stages of development showing good balance, intensity, length and complexity. Somewhat similar to my experience back in 2015. A big, muscular wine with dark dried fruits, accentuated with smoke, gaminess, asphalt and charred earth tones. Plenty of structure to support further cellaring. Dry and slightly austere in the mouth and on the finish, so food is highly recommended.

PnP'd--a mistake, needs decanting--asphalt nose masks the blackberry fruit. Aeration helps. Acid and tannins seem plentiful for more cellaring. Won't touch another until at least 2021.

Need 2 hrs to open up. Prior to this the oak and full notes were overpowering. Heavily extracted with dense dark ripe fruit and coarse tannins. Lots of smoke, coffee, and doll notes. Didn't have the lift and enjoyable fruitful exorbitance of the '09 for me.

Two different (recent) occasions to taste this have left me a bit perplexed. It isn't developing complexity and remains quite simple. Alcohol and a hollow middle palate are not encouraging at this point. It's drinkable, but not worth purchasing at a premium price. Hold to 2020, it could sort itself out yet. 14.5% abv

Today it was a nice nose and good balanced palate, but turn acidy and lost its fruit after adding more air. So careful with that. Only 88 today.

Deep Purple, moderately limpid. Dark fruit, leather and a hint of marzipan on the nose. Perfumed. Palate is dark, dried fruit, tar and leather. Bit of spice and/or licorice. Enjoyed over two days; decanted on day one for a couple of hours, drank two glasses, and returned half to the bottle and vacuumed sealed it for day two. Definitely much more approachable and subdued on day 2. Consistent with my earlier experience in August. It really needs more time but can be enjoyed with a very long decant and lots of air.

Poured into a decanter for 30 minutes and enjoyed over three hours with enchiladas, rice and beans. Big, dark purple, full bodied with a very viscous texture. Popped and poured after a very long day, service temp approx 18C. N:Red berry, smoke, orange peel, nutmeg. P: Rather plush, with balanced acidity. Red berries, tempranillo character not as well defined as with other wines. Elegant finish. None of the heat and tannin other tasters have reported. The palate shows all the alcohol, and is a little burnt in its character too; roasted qualities protrude through the thick black fruit, and dominate fairly soft powdery tannin and equally reticent acid. Impenetrable purple-black. Complex nose revealing a variety of notes - plum, blueberry, violets, milk chocolate and cured meats. Juicy palate of ripe dark fruit and hint of licorice. Savoury element and tempranillo characteristics were a bit lost in the rich and slightly spirity palate. Big bold wine - almost stereotypical New World style. Still can't quite decide if this is a bit past it or actually rather fine and aged, probably both. Fair length. I was privileged to pick up my three bottles at a late stage in its life. A bit of history and still giving pleasure.

This bottle was only opened because we ran out wine, very young and with much heat. After 1 hour in the decanter, improved but should leave this alone for a few years.

PnP, It should have been decanted. Still very young. Very nice surprise, this was good. Intense dark purple towards black color. lots of fruit without being to much on the palate. With air it improved and showed some spice, black currant, meat and a hint of licorice. Firm tanins.

Lovely wine that Richard poured us at the end of the Rioja wine tasting - certainly my favorite of the night. Soft but complex, fruity but not too new-world. Tried the next day and was just as wonderful.
