Not sure why I’ve overlooked this for so long but it’s actually quite a nice, balanced and tasty bottle. Couldn’t have paid much for this back in 2004 but it has held up nicely! Italian wine with Italian food. Surprisingly quite good.

ABV: 13.5%. 34% Merlot, 33% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 33% Sangiovese. Herbs and spices dominate the nose with a subtle hint of fruit in the background. On the palate, there's a lot of bright red fruits (think cherries and cranberries), lifted by ample acidity. However, the acidity is a bit discombobulated and some tannic grip remaining so more time in the cellar should help. The finish is lengthy so there's definitely good potential in this wine. I'd say keep your bottle …

Opened a forgotten bottle that I bought 17 years ago or so. Didn’t expect much but it is very nice. Berry notes, not very complex. Sometimes you get lucky.

Drank with meatloaf this evening. Nose of prunes and earth. Sour cherries and prunes on the palate 1 dimensional, non-eventful and past its prime.

Blackberry, pomegranate on the nose; dark fruit and alcohol on the palate; long smooth tannins on the finish. Did not work as a cocktail wine tonight but can imagine it pairing nicely with spaghetti and meatballs

Lufthansa airline red wine on the flight from Berlin to Munich and from Munich to Zagreb. In the beginning didn’t know what I am drinking but was very pleasantly surprised. Next flight from Munich to Zagreb I asked if I can buy a bottle and got one for free. Thanks Lufthansa!! Wine is 34% Sangiovese, 33% Cabernet Sauvignon and 33% Merlot. Wine region is Montecchio & Orvieto, Umbria. Winemaker Riccardo Cotarella. Wine shows dark fruit mixed with smoke, bacon, spice …

Drank off the wine list @ Betony in NY. This was sadly more than a $12 wine and I'd call it massively overpriced. Appreciated the aged characteristics and certainly was a nice mix with food, but wasn't the most appealing.

Seems more internationally styled than in the past. Don't know if it has changed or my taste has but I don't like this. Used to be a reliable cheap drink.

I have no idea what the grapes are inside, but I can tell you I was in for a surprise: dusty and dry but still smooth and drinkable and even has a bit of a welcoming smoky note; earthy finish with hints of anise and oak and touch of a cigarette ash linger. For a 14 year old with wine I really can't complain about how this one has stood the test of time.

This one was the youngest tasting on the series. Quite tannic, attractive color, still quite dark and bright. A bit lacking in lushness and firm acidic wine it is. Quite green was what one guest said. Nice $12 wine.

Cherry with herbal tinge. Light bodied with very little tannins. Although it is pretty average on its own, it really works with multiple foods. Always one of the best Italian values , year in and year out.

This wine was bought at release at probably below $10. It has been kept in a very cool cellar built as a wine cellar. The wine is garnet in color with barely a bricky/tile-like edge. The bouquet huge of toasted grains, dusty and dried lychee. It is of medium body. The tannins are soft but it definitely has a good structure. Acidity is perfect. It is mouth filling, extremely charming and complex with dried fruit and bacon fat. It has …

Essentially equal thirds of merlot, sangiovese and cabernet sauvignon ... this is a little sharp/angular for me but Mrs. Merlot liked it a lot (then again she's half Italian) so I guess I'll be going back for more. It's a little manufactured tasting though not over-oaked, so hopefully I would have guessed old world, at least. Short finish but solid backbone and pleasant dark-red fruit flavors. It won't get any better but it might last a few years.
