Newton, Cabernet Sauvignon, Yountville

Deep color showing zero hint of age or browning. Beautiful and effusive nose of damp earth, pipe tobacco (not so much green as spiced) plum, again baking spice, the palate starts strong but begins within 45 minutes; the earthiness so appealing in the nose is now drying out and shows a touch of astringency. Good today, probably at peak 5+ years ago, but oh what a nose.

Beautifully aged CA cabernet from a bulletproof vintage. Medium-bodied, dark fruit and tobacco, cedar/spice box. Obviously fully mature but zero signs of figgy, cola or root beer over-the-hill (or in-the-coffin) notes. Pleasant, drying and slightly green/cedar grip on the finish. A perfect filet mignon wine.

A great bottle of this brought by JG. Smooth as silk and fully mature with superb balance and a soft but layered texture. Such a surprise and a pleasure to drink this lighter-bodied, aged example of Cabernet which shows flavors of subdued dark fruits, cassis, tobacco and bell pepper. Not as complex as some of the bigger names but a beautifully rendered wine.

Lots of green bell pepper that was singing after an hour. Dark fruits and tertiary notes of leather were the bedrock of this wine. med+ tannin and med acid. These wines can age beautifully.

This medium-to-deep ruby offering is a blend of 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot, 4% Carignan, 2% Petit Verdot, 1% Cabernet Franc and 1% Syrah.
