Observed since June 15th. This is excellent quality, somewhat under the radar it seems. It's true that I am leaning towards "port cask matured" among the scotches, but I compared this directly to the Talisker Port Ruighe as well as the Ardmore 12 Port Wood Finish, and this one can compete in quality if not exactly in my preference since those have the warm wood fire peat added while this one is without peat. I will rate this as equal …

A very inviting and well mannered whisky. Full round, smooth, nutty, smoky edge, almost fruity and with a spicy side. Silky and rich almost toffee feel at time. If not looking for a very serious and tight drink this will do the trick. Very nice although one can argue that all these tasting notes are a result of moving it from casks and port pipes etc etc. Still we really liked it.

Last dram, quite delicious and balanced. On the grassy side, with hints of smoke here and there. Relatively light. Very nice whisky.

First opening of this bottle. Lots of maple and vanilla. Hints of grass. A nice light dram. Nice sweetness on the finish with baking spices. Delicious, and the finish lasts a good 15-20 seconds.

The standard Tomatin 12, which is aged entirely in sherry cask. Gold straw color, rich honeyed and sultana, soft palate with good complexity. Not jaw-dropping but a really solid entry-level that brings a good amount of golden, sherried richness without too much weight or sweetness. Really smooth, too.

Sweet malt, ginger and clove with subtle and elegant peat on the nose. Good flavours and finish; a bit warm and a bit sweet; good length. June 2005
