Epoch, Estate Blend, Paso Robles

I sometimes shy from Syrah varietals and GSMs because the Syrah just wipes out all the fun. But this one seems to be just right: enough fruit (Grenache) and finish at the end (Mourvèdre mo betta), and some pepper and spice in the middle. Paired great with Tuscan lasagna (plenty of rosemary).

Very inviting nose of blackberry and some maple syrup. Taste profile has some dark fruit and a tad of mint sneaking through. Tannins are firm and enjoyable, but not overpowering.

This is in a good place. Mocha and floral notes and slight bit of raisin on the nose. The wine is chewy with some cherry notes and it has a pretty nice finish also. This was well worth the wait.

Like many other 2008 Paso reds, this is right in it's drinking window. Spicy red fruit, mocha, smoke, with a bit of earth and mineral. Lots of heat on the nose and palate that dissipate somewhat with air. Full-bodied and very rich with a long alcoholic finish. Enjoyable, but bordering on a fortified wine experience. I'd drink over the next few years.

Sharon's Birthday (Kapcsandy, Rhys, Huet, Pape Clement, +++) (GHT) : Purple/ruby in color. The nose has raspberries, cherries and black raspberries. Is there Zin in this? The nose has that bramble quality as well. Full bodied. Not complex but lots of tasty fruit. Easy to drink. Red fruits mostly. An earthy undertone.

Decanted for about 3 hours before drinking. A complex wine with notes of dark berry, raspberry, pepper and some violet. Nice soft tannins. An excellent blend that pairs well with a range of meals.

Decanted for 24 hours. Wow. I did not expect this kind of power and expression from Epoch's mongrel blend. Deep flavors of raspberry and licorice finishing with cocoa; chewy in texture with a pleasing, raspy mouthfeel; and a finish which goes on and on. This is a serious wine, a big wine but with a touch of femininity and found in Epoch's barren bargain barrel. Impressive.

Raspberry notes with deep chocolate and oak on the long finish. Cellared for over a year and much smoother after a couple of hours after opening. Excellent wine.

Decanted for 1 hour. Beautiful ruby color with tempered tannins that softened by hour 2. Blends this young we typically decant for 2-3 hours but initial sip at corking demonstrated great promise without having to wait to long. Wonderful fruit mix with leather and earth that made us drink slowly to enjoy as long as possible. Cellared, we don't anticipate keeping our remaining bottles past 2014 based on this pouring.

Raisin, strawberry and red fruit notes. Big wine...I'd leave it to cellar for a year. A bit of heat....

Strangely this bottle was completely different from the one previously tasted. It reminded me much more of the wine tasted at the winery when I purchased both bottles. Wine was rich, delicious, smooth full-bodied blackberry fruit with chocolate and sage flavors, a little tight and short, but with excellent structure, very well integrated fruit, good value for the quality, although restrained there was complexity in this bottle but not the previous one.

Paso Tasting Day : Blend of Syrah, Tempranillo, Grenache, Petite Syrah and Mourvedre. Fruit is very nice here. Dark and red fruits, some earthiness. Still think this needs time and was a bit aggressive on the finish.

16.3% ABV. Prior to seeing KStoddard's note, I would have bet this had a healthy dose of Zinfandel in it, but alas, wrong again. Spicy nose of clove and red fruit liqueur. Full bodied with sweet red berry fruit on the palate and some spice and balsa echoing the nose.
