Ferreira, Vintage Port

Double decanted 5 hours ahead of service. Dark ruby with a clear rim. Most of the hot alcohol has blown off with the five hours. Lots of figs, dates, and fruit cake. An excellent wine that I think is fully mature but won't decline for a number of years.

Quick decant. Nose of sweet black fruit, fresh mint, and brandy. Rich, deeply fruit driven palate of sweet black plum, black fig, black licorice, and black tar. A line of firm tannins quickly gives way to road asphalt, campfire ash, and dry black fruits with a touch of oak. Balanced, sophisticated and likely peaking.

1994 Ferreira VP. Decanted 7 hours. Nose has a complex mix of passion fruit, green pepper, lavender and plums. Perhaps the most exotic nose for a ‘94 I’ve had. Still extremely youthful in the mouth. Where many of this vintage are now showing secondary characteristics, this is still tannic and full of primary black fruit with no obvious changes given its approaching 30 years of age. Cellared this for the last 20 years I think! Glad I waited but I think this has a very long life ahead as it is still quite primary, with a dark purple opaque color and blackberry, chocolate, and coffee notes predominating. Tannins are mostly faded. Alchohol is wel integrated. Finish is medium. A really enjoyable vintage port!

opened in oct. It's Ok. The nose is super. There is still alcohol in it, and the predominant tastes on the palate are: 1) sweetness; 2) cassis. I don't think it's great, but it's certainly far far far from lousy. (Personally cellared [I mean, who else would cellar it?] for at least 15 and more probably 20 years.)

On the nose: a bit of musk, red berries, caramel, nuts. A bit of smoke initially but burned off quickly. On the palette: strong black cherries, red plums, nuts, raisins, and a note of caramel. Medium long finish. Note: Decanted for two hours. Lots of sediment. Delicious with dark chocolate and with Gianduja truffles.

This is fully mature, with quite a bit of browning on the rim. Dried flowers, Christmas spices, fruitcake, licorice and nutty caramel notes. This melts in you mouth, with suave, fully resolved tannins. Lovely, but I would tend to drink up (based on this bottle).

Deep dark center, dark red rim with signs of age. Sweet, plums and licorice, a little smokey, alcohol present. Smooth and sweet, strong licorice, nice mature port flavors wrapped up with more licorice, some acidity, modest tannins, nutty, good long finish of ripe red fruits. Did I mention the licorice? Decanted two hours, very smooth fruit forward mature VP, lots of currants, cassis, not overly complex, absolutely void of tannins but should last for several more years. On another note personally cellared for 22 years.

More youthful bottle. Mature, but denser and brighter. Very good now, but could age for another 5 years. What a 94 port should be like. Bought on release (20+ year ago, like wineshaman), but variable storage and a cross country move in the intervening years.

1945 FERREIRA VINTAGE PORT- this was somewhat understated with the aromatics and tastes being mild expressions of spicy, black fruit with accents of mild coffee notes; the tannins were soft and the body and weight was medium at best; a bit of heat came in at the end; I`m thinking that if I had this by itself, it would have been fantastic.

As before, the wine improved after opening. Best after about four days. My previous score of 90 was way too high. It is perfectly drinkable, but lacks the complexity and flavor that I want from a vintage port. Perhaps that will come if the wine is aged an additional 5 or 10 years.

Purchased 6 days ago. Bottles were upright on store shelves. Opened one two days ago. The cork broke. Decanted through port funnel with mesh filter. There was NO sediment. Later poured out the remaining 6 ml which did have sediment. When bottle was rinsed with water more sediment came loose. Concentrated black cherry and berry fruit. Lots of meat, leather, and tobacco. (Just smell the empty glass; the fruit disappears but the aromas are powerful.) Toasty oak, evoking thoughts of cocoa. Strong tannins. This is a big, serious port, no question. I would say it is still at least five years from reaching its peak. It seems it's hard to go wrong with 1994 vintage port. What a powerful vintage. I detect the faintest hint of cork taint.

Excellent bottle. Still plenty of richness and depth... a little heat on the finish, but all in all a great value. Served for a large group, so no leftovers to test out on day 2, will want to test the longevity on this one on the next bottle.

Every bit worth the scores. It was drinking beautifully pop and pour but over the evening became sophisticated, balance and fruit in perfect harmony. Truly impressed and day two is better still. Would like to find more. So, now, prunes, cherries, cinnamin, very aromatic and sensual with a hint of mint as well. Lovely port.

Really nice. Opened on New Year's Eve night/early morning and finished four days later. Excellent grip. The alcohol is a little hot but the wine is delicious. Notes of toffee and hazelnuts. The tannins are firm but supple and the wine has plenty of time left in the bottle.
