Willi Schaefer, Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spatlese, Mosel

I am so glad I waited this wine has come into it’s own Honey suckle, tea rs is completely integrated and soften, perfectly balanced, intriguing, layered and only 8% EtOH

Superbly balanced with a beautiful fragrance that develops with air, combining fresh orchard fruits, florality and maturing smokiness. It's ripe, moderately sweet and yet showing a remarkable sense of freshness and definition even though the acidity's not very high; the balance here is outstanding and there's a very elegant, polished texture to the mouthfeel. Schaefer seems to have really done an amazing job in 2003, I've had only great experiences with his Spätlese.

Elegant, balanced and slightly creamy, with smoky overtones growing as it got more air. The fruit is ripe, but not at all flat or flabby. Finishes quite clean and fresh. Very nice.
