A month in Barolo: The tasting menu (with wine pairing) at La Ciau del Tornavento (Treiso, Barbaresco, Piedmont, Italy) : Poured from magnum. Pure, elegant, mature Sangiovese aromas. I was told this is aged in large barrel, but to me there's certainly a notion of wood coming through on the nose that I wouldn't expect for botti. Overall, quite a perfume on the nose, though. Round and mature on the palate, showing more of those typical Sangiovese notes. Decent acid …

Tasted next to 2014 Le Pergole Torte. Less generous than the 2016 Montevertine tasted before, reflecting the cooler year. Fresh, bright, intense. Very vibrant, again not a lot of depth but good length. Nice. 90-92

Lovely with pizza tonight. A refined version of Sangio, with cherry and baking spices on the nose, and a well balanced earthy cherry infused palate. Mid-weight but not lacking in depth. Very good.

Alas my last of 6 remarkable btls from a semi over ripe Tuscan vintage. Not here, in the hands of Montvertine. The emphasis on form, simplicity, proportion, clarity of structure, organic farming, perfection & restrain has acheived a very balanced, deep & successful ''07 to rival the ages. Opened 2-1/2hrs b4 dinner & finding it a bit tight decided to double decant which did the trick. 60 minutes later this was singing in my Riedel Burgs. Gorgeous yet focused red …

Barely translucent garnet. Nose of cherry notes, airy floral scents, leather, earth. Layers of ringing red cherry, plum, leather, earthy tones, and satin on the palate. Freshening acidity and smoothed, slightly dusty tannin. Moderately long finish of cherry, plum, leather, and spice. Excellent with summer pasta.

Pop and pour. This has been open for 4 days, corked but unrefrigerated on the counter overnight each night. On the nose: gorgeous hi-toned sangiovese: strawberry, tomato leaf, sweet tobacco, blood orange. On the palate: lovely acidity, blood orange, sour cherry, green herbs...weightless, elegant and still rather primary. Soft tannin on the tangy, juicy finish.

This was a lovely showing; red fruited and supremely elegant; hints of mint and orange peel, but still really quite primary with red currant, raspberry, and tart cherry. Super pure, elegant, ethereal and delicious. Not a powerful vintage of Montevertine, but its at age 10 and sailing along. Wish I had a few more.

Certainly much better than it was a decade ago - tho I haven’t had it in the meantime. Still fresh and vibrant, but showing aged oak notes. Honestly, I think it was best at p&p, when the fruit was most forward. Oak took over as it aired. Generally well balanced and delicious though.

Popped and poured. The 2014 Montevertine is a little shy at first but with a little air, the quality becomes undeniable. Still developing, this is a beautiful and elegant expression from Radda with notes of Bing cherry, leather, red flowers, dried herbs, ferrous minerals and subtle spices. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes on the nose. The finish is long and gives the impression that you’re drinking something special. While …

Brimming with confidence, doesn't need a label. You know what this is. It's stalwart Sangio - true to its core, to the estate, to the cuvee, sophisticated and deep. Barely stick your nose in and you're hit hard with a mixed bag of the stuff you expect and more - cherries and leather, mint and spruce, dates, raisins. Minerals and a scaffolded structure you gotta work through just a bit, but comes together amazingly well.

Definitely some upside here. Lip smacking 'Chianti' here. With this vintage being a challenging one, a taster can see that the winemaker did all the right things in such a difficult year. Needs a ton of air. Beautiful haunting aromatics after 1.5 hours in the decanter. I see some good upside here in the next few years if you can keep your corkscrews out of this bottle. The purity here is amazing. Bravo.

Opened 2hrs before dinner and finding it a bit austere decided to decant which did the trick. 60 minutes later this was singing in my Riedel Burgs with sips leading up to Nita's homemade pizza. Early balsamic notes all but disappeared replaced by generous red fruit ala '07, mineral & forest floor notes. While ripe this was exceedingly well balanced and alive. Color is a maturing semi translucent ruby red with some lighter tints on the edges. Deep & rewarding …

Popped and poured. Translucent garnet with scarlet component. Nose of violets, cherry, trace iodine, fine earth, leathery notes. Silky layers of pure red cherry, spicy plum fruit and earth on the palate. Refreshing acidity and smoothed, faintly dusty tannin. Longer finish of elegantly-presented piquant red cherry fruit and fine-grained soil. Beautifully balanced, graceful wine showing very well in its youth.

This is just such a beautiful wine. Light on its feet, yet with a purity of character and nuance that makes it something you just want to keep coming back to. Probably very early in its drinking window, as there is still a lot of freshness and lively red fruit. Somewhat elusive on the first day, when drunk out of Zalto universal. On the second day, decanted an hour from recorked hal-fbottle, out of Zalto Burgundy glasses (also tried out of Zalto universal with unsatisfactory result), it is much better: The nose is full of amaretto cherries and the taste shows a typical sour twist and is still surprisingly youthful at age 13. PNP sip lead to 2 hour+ slow ox prior to dinner. Drank great from Riedel Burg glasses! Coming from the warm 07 vintage this really benefits from serving cooler than room temp. The Alc is a modest 13% but the fruit really shines with a little chill which seems to enhance freshness. We drank it mostly around 58-62 tops. Semi translucent mid ruby red color. Excellent aromas of minerally underbrush and berries. Vibrant red fruit mix of raspberry and strawberry …

Rusty minerality, red cherries and strawberries, cinnamon, tea, tobacco. Such sweet and lovely fruit - it still has freshness and is devoid of any alcoholic sensations. Silkiness like a top burgundy. Pizza Night with Aged Classic Reds Ten Plus Years Old (Rocknroller's (Kevin's)) : Very dark red color. Drank 1 glass over 2 hours. Much riper and darker than the '06. Ripe dark fruits, quite aromatic immediately, floral potpourri, crushed flowers, blackberries, black cherry liqueur, silky tannins, with some heat. Drank better early then the '06, but ultimately the vintage and varietal character of the '06 put it ahead for me. Did not hold up on day two.

Pizza night at Kevin's / R&Rler. Brad's btl tonight alongside my '06. This was more similar than different from mine but a bit richer reflecting the vintage. Another excellent example of Montevertine that did not suffer from the riper vintage. I'm totally happy to have 3 left from purchase on release. Semi translucent bright red. We thought perhaps the sweet and slightly precocious '07 Montevertine had shown its best already, but the wine took a turn in another direction. It's definitely not fully developed yet. For the moment the aromas focus on sage, tobacco, earth, and black cherries. it is relatively warm and full-bodied, with lots of stuffing left for a longer future. No hurry at all to finish these lovely bottles.
