Dark ruby, even a little purple. Hardly any rim variation and no bricking. Powerful fruity nose of ripe cherry and slight menthol. I likened it to Ludens cough drops and everyone immediately agreed. With a little time in glass some toasty oak notes began to emerge, and it shifted over into Cherry Cola territory which I do not like much. This did not show much in the way of the animal/sauvage/earthy/spicy notes one would like to see in NSG. This …

Modern style wine with quite a lot of extraction as I remember from the last bottle. The fruit is fading now and the wine is becoming more balanced. The NSG characteristics are more prominent which makes this wine much better than in it’s younger phase.

Drinking well. Modern in style. Sour cherry on the nose. Medium bodied with a nice core of red fruit, backed up by decent acidity. A bit one-dimensional but enjoyable nonetheless.

A pleasant surprise. Drinking very well. Earthy with favors of stewed fruit.

Lovely color. The nose is round and fat, showing slightly stewed fruit, ripe berries, hints of licorice and mineral. This is medium full bodied on the palate, with very good concentration. A bit extracted and rigid though. The medium length finish lacks a bit of acidity.

Opened for 1 hour , served in Riedel Vinum Burgundy stems at 63 F. Very closed at first took an additional hour to open up. Clear garnet color of medium plus intensity, Medium bodied with Medium plus acid. Nose of black currant, cherries, mushrooms, and salty air. Palate was much of same as the nose.. This wine was strongly intense flavored with medium plus tannins. Outstanding

Drinking well now. Dark ruby/purple. Blackberry jam on the nose, medium body with explosive palate of dark cherry. Great balance with intense fruit, good acisty, and smooth tannin and mineral on the long, delicious finish.

SN liked it, AN did not. Perhaps the Clos de la Roche was a tough act to follow . . .

Dark ruby, reserved and primary nose of black cherry, candied cherry and beet, sweet and creamy on the attack with dark mineral driven fruit, allspice and a touch of acidity, lengthy finish with dusty but sweet cherry syrup and stony undertones

Deep ruby color. Nose of sweet black fruit and spring flowers. Medium bodied with good presence through the middle on the palate, fine tannins were not overpowering. Modern in style and attractive but somewhat anodyne.

Brought to Ann Albin’s house for Thanksgiving. We opened the bottle and let it breathe for a couple of hours. Lovely!

(88-89) Drank at Mom and Dad’s house with Steven (Mulford) and pizza. Everyone liked it except AN. Too “new world.” [rating is AN’s]

Going from memory on this one, but this was arguably the finest Burgundy I've had. Although I'm a fan of the traditional Burg funk, this wine only had a light funk to it. At the same time, the fruit content seemed to be perfect, unlike the overpowering fruitiness found in some California Pinots. I can't wait to have more of this wine.

Unusually dense and concentrated, probably due to the hot vintage. Loads of blackberry and black cherry. Dense, polished tannins.

I would have guessed this to be a Kistler in a blind tasting. Intense flavors of black cherry and plum, with a long mineral tinged, sweet finish.

Opened at Brabo tasting dinner. Good, but so outshone by the 1989 Meyney as to become irrelevant.

Of the Magnien wines, I like this better than most. A floral with licorice / an almost medicinal nose (not in a bad way, just reminiscent) with fruit and mineral on the palate.

Extremely fruit forward on opening (crowd pleasing for non Burgundy drinkers) but evolves to more terroir and mature nose and palete after 30 minutes or so.

Deep red with lots of bright, clean red fruit flavours and some licorice in the nose and mouth. Full bodied and a bit clunky/unbalanced in the mouth, and not particularly complex or memorable.

Still very primary, but also very pure. This wine has a beautiful nose of plum and raspberry, with a full-bodied,long, fruity finish with red and black fruits, and sweet tannins. Much better than the NSG Pruliers and the CM Borniques. Should have a bright future.
