2012 vintage

Ripe grapes, raisins, burnt caramel and citrus skins. Fully evolved, good acidity, lovely balance despite the age. Went well with a simple cheese course of Comte, Wendesley Dale with cranberries, truffled brie as well as truffled cheddar.

1992 vintage

Pleasant sweetness, with a hint of orange indeed. Perfect combination with Indonesian kitchen.

2012 vintage

Starts out restrained but this gains subdued intensity and structure with air. Sweet notes of mango, orange pith, pollen, and a nice floral element are lifted by balanced acidity. A charming, if reticent, wine.

Eðalklúbburinn rúllar um Rónardalinn.; 5/23/2022-5/27/2022 (10 vínhús og ein súkkulaðigerð heimsótt í norður og suður Rónardalnum.) : Sætur límónusafi, börkur, fura, harpix, appelsínubörkur í nefi. Svo á tungunni. Límóna. Ferskleiki. Niðursoðnar apríkósur (confit) og appelsínubörkur. 5 árum eldra en síðasta vín. Þetta var mjög þægilegt.

2014 vintage

Very pale lemon. Nose is a bit restrained, mostly orange peel, pear, white flowers. Moderate plus acid goes a long way to keep this in balance. Palate has some herbal, lavender character that also keeps this restrained. Pairs very well with cheese. Overall very delicate. Not bad but doesn’t intrigue me to look any further into this appellation.

2014 vintage

Tasted the 2013 next to it, this demi of 2012 was a lot smoother, felt like it was a few years older, the 13 had a bit more acid and a subtle bitternes in the after taste (mind you, still a really good Beaumes-de-Venise). Unclear if this was the harvest or the fact it was a demi bottle, ongoing debate, I will try to find more 2012 though.

Ever slight syrupy consistency. Green apple nose. Apricot, wildflower honey and stewed pair in the glass. Long bittersweet herbal finish. Delicious and easy drinking.

FWS Rhone Class (La Caille) : Nice wine, if not a bit simple. Orange notes dominate this wine, marmalade, apricot, and potpourri too Sweet and delicious, but not a ton of depth

Last of a half case of these purchased directly from Madam Leydier. I speak no French, and she no English. Two decades ago, we spent a delightful hour there "conversing" through gestures and pantomime. She was a delightful, wizened woman who clearly cared very much for her vines. The fruit was fading, but this was still a wonderful bottle -- honeyed, fragrant, perfect at the end of the day.

Delish! I don't remember whether I've ever tried this type of sweet wine before. But I like it. An affordable alternative to Sauternes. $15 for a half bottle. Will buy again.

My first taste of Muscat de Beaumes-de-Venise. Lemon peel and tons of honey on the nose/palate, highly aromatic. Sweetness not quite balanced by acidity, and alcohol quite noticeable - almost Sherry-like notes on the back-end, short finish. Compared to Sauternes, quite a bit more alcoholic - would not be my first choice for a dessert wine.

I do not have any experience with Muscat de Beaumes-de-Venise, and my primary points of reference for a wine such as this are Sauternes and the sweet white wines of the Loire. This wine was sweeter than most of the former and all of the latter (at least in my experience). Moreover, it does not bear much of a resemblance to the Aussie (and other) Muscats I have had, which have tended to be darker and richer. Okay, enough of …

Attractive perfumed aroma of grape, white peach, papaya, white flowers, vanilla custard, a fresh herbaceous streak, and a hint of sweet grain like oatmeal or malted barley. Similar on the palate, with an even more prominent floral character, like honeysuckle nectar. Good freshness; adequate acidity to keep it fresh and highly drinkable, despite that on balance it is fairly sweet. Good length; lingering white peach skin. Good general moreishness. Tasty stuff.

PHMG WAG: the Southern Rhones (Chez Lyon in Eugene, OR) : This was a real treat at the end served with a Crater Lake Blue from Rogue Creamery. Honey and spice notes dress up the tropical fruit. Sweet but not cloying. Remarkable that an entire appellation is dedicated to this one style, the "Sauternes of the Rhone" I suppose.

Cotes du Rhone Villages Offline (Rotisserie Jules, London, UK) : Pretty standard Muscat de B de V, but a little more viscous and richer. Better balancing acidity than expected. Nice finish to the meal.

Project closing dinner (TriBeCa Restaurant, Brussels, Belgium) : Beautiful floral nose. Mouth-filling, dense. Balance somewhat too much tilted to the sugar, lacking "subtlety". Very good but not great. Nez floral sublîme. Fort présent en bouche, très dense. Equilibre un peu trop versé vers le sucre, manquant d'acidité et de subtilité. Très bon mais n'atteignant pas l'excellence.

Tasted at a Northern Rhone tasting on 4/18/2005. I have no idea how much, if any, time this may have spent in a decanter. My guess is it was a pop and pour. Can you say orange marmalade?
