Elk Cove, Mount Richmond Pinot Noir, Yamhill-Carlton

This is a mild Pinot, not big and bold. Medium dry with mild tannin. Fruit is mild with notes of cranberry with some mineral and herbal notes. Plenty of structure and I would expect this to hold on for another year or so.

Brought to Mashomack for dinner. Helen had lam chops i had the bolognese. This was a good bottle but not super interesting. For its age it basically has all the fruit but the structure wasn’t that interesting. Just straight up solid wine. The age was a bit prevalent but also could have been mistaken for a you ger wine. Overall good but had expected more.

Paired quite well with roast duck. Nose is fairly subdued, there's a little green earthiness there, but not much else. Less tart than yer normal Willamette PN (and, indeed, other Elk Cove offerings I've had.) Still, good acidity and bright cherry cola. Definitely more "mellow" than "assertive".

Really nice light to medium bodied Willamette Pinot. Lightly acidic in a good way; plum, cherry flavors are part of the smooth profile. Didn't decant but did use an aerator for the first glass.

Nice nose. Typical Elk Cove PN. Drinking well right no. Relatively simple and linear flavor profile. Long finish. Nice fresh acidity. Should improve for several years.

Dinner with Ata Rangi and Escarpment winemakers : Helen had brought this Pinot Noir back from the US ... a touch of VA provided a lifted note on the nose. Also suggestions of bracken, underbrush and a bit of funk, with mainly dark berry fruit. Young and primary on palate. It really needs 10+ years. Very dark fruited with prominent acidity. Below medium weight, presently quite straightforward. Perhaps it'll blossom into something more interesting with that additional cellar time?

Classic Oregon Pinot. Very well balanced but nothing spectacular.

PNP; opened up immediately with a strong burst of red berries and a touch of cloves. Slightly sweet at first, developed nicely by time I finished the second glass. A much lighter style than usual for Elk Cove, had bright acidity and gentle tanins.

Bright, interesting nose but didn't follow through onto the palate. Thin and nondescript with a bitter finish. For $40 from this producer I would have expected better.

Popped and consumed over two days. Not what I was expecting. Got some heat and redness but lacked depth. Day two it mellowed and was pleasant but overall not a stand out Pinot.

Through the aerator into the glass for one hour. In the glass: Dark garnet, slight brown tint, long thin legs. On the nose: Hot cedar, spice, indistinct fruit, whiff of wet canvas funk. In the mouth: Med mouth feel, ok concentration, lots of tartness, some light squeaky tannins in the middle, weenzy bitter on the tart finish. Very earthy, silky smooth, great fruit. Somehow not tasting quite like a canonical OR Pinot Noir, but very enjoyable all the same.

Popped and poured with teriyaki pork tenderloin. Aroma has blak cherry and clove. Taste is really smooth with a lot of pure black cherry fruit with some earthiness.

Wine Blogger's Conference 2012- Oregon Wines; 8/15/2012-8/18/2012 (Portland, OR) : Dark ruby color. Cherry, anise, eastern spice and mushroom aromas. Plum and red fruit with mineral, smoky earth and violet highlights. Rich and silky with peppery acid and fine tannins. Full finish. Very nice.

Beautiful nose; beautiful palate, nice amount of earth to balance the Dark fruit , hint of red fruit; very silky texture, very nice level of acidity, nice weight while not heavy - between a Bourgogne and a California. REALLY liked this wine.

Had a taste of this last night at the DC Cochon 555 event. Nice nose of darker berries, blackberry, raspberry, with some asian spice. Palate was similar with black berries leading the way, a little forest loam, and baking spices showing. My favorite wine of the tasting.

Pop and pour: After some vigorous swirling for a few minutes the nose shows gentle red fruits with a light sweetness to them and some dry soil. Smells quite nice. This vintage looks like it's on the way to being like the 2008 vintage which received a 94 point rating in Wine Spectator. Mount Richmond Vineyard is a great southeast facing vineyard in Yamhill-Carlton AVA with steep slopes and Willakenzie soils. Elk Cove's farming techniques help the vines produce very concentrated Pinot Noir fruit. Dark cherry fruit and big intensity on the palate. Very limited production - only 900 cases produced.

North Willamette Vintner's Wine Trail Weekend; 4/10/2010-4/11/2010 : Tasted two barrels of this.
