Ghislaine Barthod, Chambolle-Musigny

My last bottle of this was oxidised. This was from the same case and absolutely singing. Very pure red and purple fruits with some violets on the nose. Great flesh and depth for a village wine. Layered and underpinned by minerally structure. Balanced and just showing a hint of earthy development. Expansive and long.

1990s Burgundy, part one (Noize) : Dark and youthful, probably unready - sure, Barthod and 1999 both have a reputation for backwardness, but I thought a 22yo village would be more open than this. Black cherry, blueberry, tobacco and menthol showed themselves in glimpses, then were clamped down by the structure. My favourite of the first flight, based on the more aromatic intervals.

Nick A’s 1990’s burgundy (Noizé, London) : Again, quite dark with a slightly dusty element to the nose. Youthfully resolved. Lovely texture. A little hig( toned on the nose without being volatile. With air the tannic structure reasserts itself. ***

Excellent. Dark and deep colour. Earthy, with some organge showing through with time in the glass. Full and succulent. Really outstanding for a village wine.

During a tasting lunch. Dark garnet. Nose of red fruit, game, spices. Very dense and fruity still on the palate with great freshness. Excellent to drink now, no sign of oxidation or musty notes. Wow, a village wine of 15 years of age, full of power and live. Kudos.

Robust and muscular, with no sign of any decline in the quality of the fruit, and if I say slightly rustic rather than refined, I don't mean that in any negative way. It fits perfectly well with the meaty body, the acidic backbone, and the chewy tannins. This is a Burgundy to enjoy with roast meat on a winter evening. dg

Bonneau du Martray, Ghislaine Barthod, Clos des Lambrays and other Auction Steals (Alex's place) : From a magnum. A solid village, but I did not exactly its styling –a bit too firm and extracted for a Chambolle. If served blind, I might have guessed a Vosne or even an NSG. Decanted 1 hour. Pale red. Cigar leaf, violet and cassis nose. Soft entry, pleasant acidity and sweetness. Faint metallic tinge on an otherwise lively and light black fruit mid-palate. Medium to long final. This wine is dancing but slowly fading away.

Only OK. Maybe past prime. (5 days later, this is still pleasant, and somewhat smoother, so properly stored bottles should continue to drink for another 2-4 years.)

Bryan's Barhod Offline (28-50, London) : En magnum. Qite a dark dense nose, witha slightly strange edge to it, a little reduced I think. Seems to lift with a bit of air. Dense with velvety tannins. Deep dark red still , a glorious earthy bouquet of beetroot and morello cherry. Tremendous freshness and balance on the palate with a long finish and a late ethereal note of wild strawberry . Excellent.

Decanted back into original bottle and slow O'd 2 hours. Served at 12 C. As per my previous notes. Lovely villages wine with a deft touch. Fruit is starting to fade a bit and I will get to my last 2 bottles over the next year or two.

The structure is prominent; strong acidity and forward tannins. The fruit is there to support it though; intense red berry flavours, heightened by the acidity, and underpinned by the slightly gruff tannins. To judge from other notes it was problematic in earlier years, but right now it's in a pleasurable place (if you like the structure) and I think the best is yet to come. vg+

No signs of drying out, which surprised me a bit since i had a bottle two years ago which was clearly over the top. Overwhelmingly perfumed, not only in a positive way, as the violets came too close to candy for my taste. Nevertheless, very well balanced with impressive length for an 11 year old chambolle villlage, and refreshing acidity.

Decanted 1.5 hours, served at 15C. Followed a delighfully full on Felton Road pinot and was a counterpoint in terms of style. Light, fragrant bouquet with a noticeable trace of licorice and some spice sitting alongside cherry and raspberry notes. Brisk attack with prominent acidity, quickly folding around the tongue and lightly but persistently ringing out raspberries, violets and a sweet licorice core countering the acidity. From Magnum. Medium intense strawberry fruit, still quite youthful and a little closed, but opening out with time in glass to display some rich and savoury notes. Medium/full bodied on the palate, decent depth with red cherry and strawberry fruit, firm but fine tannin, not particulalry complex but some nice pure fruit. Finish is good length but slightly firm. Needs a bit more time in this format, try another in 2-3 years. 88 with potential upside.

Tar and cherry with a a good acid backbone. A bit like a light brunello. Very nice, straightforward wine. Great value at the release price, not sure it's worth the £40ish this would cost in retail...

Sappy forest floor, aged red fruit, cedar, pine and some lifted spice on the nose. A bit of acid pokes through on the palate but food quickly remedies this. Moderate length finish with sappy red fruit and pine. This is fully mature and should be drunk up. Pleasant but hardly memorable.

Had last night, so no formal notes. Started off slightly oxidized, simple and short. Required about four hours in the decanter before it showed well (similar to a 1996 Clavelier Beaux Monts recently). Gained body, length, complexity over that time and was still going strong when the bottle was finished around hour 8. I'm not entirely convinced of this wine, but convinced enough to buy 3 more.
