Starts off very savoury and quite demure. Really builds in the glass and is a wine of no artifice. There are smoked meats and game and violets and tart cherries. It is compact through the mid but fleshes out. You feel every rocky bump and spice is of the floral persuasion. Ethereal and engaging. Not a wow wine but a wine that you must come to and then it shows its charms. Persistent and utterly satisfying.

4th of 6, decanted 20 minutes, crumbly cork but perfect level, less convincing than last bottle in 21, meaty and spicey, but also too broad, dense and somehow clumsy and hot, no sense of transparency, no fireworks but nice enough, enough here for some upside, no rush. Just about F (17.5).

Following up a 2004 Dom Pérignon P2 is no easy task, but this 1999 Bruno Clavelier Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru 'Lex Beaux Monts' truly lived up to the fight. This was most certainly at its peak, balancing out savouriness with lots of fruit still intact on what was a bottle in perfect condition. Cleaning out the cellar. Had some low aspirations for this bottle, and it turned out to be wine of the night. Beautiful red fruit melange with some sous bois and forest floor shining through loud and clear. At peak? I thought so. Savory Vosne in a nice spot.

3rd of 6, pnp, perfect cork and level, in line with last bottle noted in Jan 18, attractive, quite fat, good line and length, stubbornly backward like many 99s, nose only started to reveal itself in final glass which betrayed a hint of spice whilst mostly black fruit driven, decent balance and none of the VA noted by the last reviewer, beefy not transparent, upside possible. Just about F+ (18).

Nose has dark red fruit and some nice spice notes, but is overall tense and closed. Austere and inexpressive aromatics. Smells a little hot actually. Palate is hard red candy, a little syrupy and with a bitter core, no fruit remaining. Traces of Beaumont spice but moreover pine resin in this example. Dry tannin. Volatile acidity too. Rather unpleasant.

1st of 6, pnp, perfect cork and level - dark, very glossy, cherry red, little development; cherry and meat, sweetish core, touch of spice, nail varnish (very characteristic of these '99s), quite mineral; fullish, long, persistent and concentrated, silky, high toned, quality fruit and nice touch of spice,, grip, needs a couple of years to resolve properly and for the varnish to blow off, but pleasurable now. Expect an upgrade from current F (17.5).

Wait, wait, wait on the remaining bottles. This has real promise, but still just a little too much dusty tannins. Do not try another bottle until 2017 at the earliest and really 2019 for more optimal drinking. Should be really good.

Medium ruby/garnet core, medium pale ruby rim. Nose shows dark, spicy fruit, notes of blood and dusty earth, violets. Medium bodied with dark smoky fruit, sinuous with underlying fine but still quite firm tannin, touch of earth and slightly dusty tannin showing on the extended, persistent finish. Drinkable now but still with the potential to improve over the next 5-10 years. Excellent.

Another Burg opened too soon, but with my folks visiting for the Thanksgiving holiday we soldiered on with a decanter. After about an hour of air the wine stated to show all its spice, dark red fruit and earthy elements. It's also a bit minty (surprise), and the overall package, while young, is delicious.

This bottle is drinking surprisingly well. It's meaty, red and black fruited, and has good acid balance. It's still very young, but despite that quite delicious and perfumed. Lovely.

Medium blood red, just a touch of garnet throughout. Narrow paler rim showing just the same. Lovely perfumed sweet red fruit on the nose - very classic Vosne - violets and spice. A little oak, which doesn't detract at all, but adds complexity. Lovely, lovely, lovely - and keep on sniffing. With air just a touch of soubois appears too. Mouth entry is supple and sweetly fruited but with super crispness from good acidity. Mid-palate shows more fruit - blueberries …

Followed the Auxey 1999, and this too gave away its brutal dry quality on the nose, but lifted a bit by a menthol tone - lots going on - game and minerals - but tough tannins and complete absence of any fruit took away the enjoyment - perhaps time will redeem this

A bit of rubber/reductive character at the forefront of the nose, but if you could look past that, it was really lovely with rhubarb, raspberry, chocolate, iodine and a slate like note to it. Palate is really superbly structured with fine tannins and very good length. Could use another 5 years to develop at least.

I've read lots of notes about Vosne spice over the years, but here it is right in front of me. Spices, rich, almost grapey fruit, and also quite a lot of tannin. This has the fruit to hold for a long time, and the structure is there to see it through to old age.
