Decided to conduct a side by side of the 2016 GTR vs the Grand Total Single Barrel Lot from the same year. All over a roasted rack of lamb dinner with rice pilaf and sauteed peas with pancetta. While the Single Barrel Lot was hard to beat, this publicly available GTR held its own very well. I echo both darrenv and VinoLoco recent TNs. Great balance and depth here. Definitely in its drinking window but has the structure for another …

Fantastic. Big nose of black fruit, stewed prunes, leather, tar. Full bodied, jammy (after an hour decant), but one fault is maybe do not decant. Two hours later it faded and was not delivering the punch it did at one hour. I'd say this is drinking great right now, but just pop and pour. I would not hold this for more than a couple of years.

Had in a fully blind tasting - all 2016 vintages - Black Hills Nota Bene, La Frenz Grand Total, Painted Rock Red Icon, and Road 13 5th Element. 9 tasters ranked wines 1 to 4. The 7 other more experienced (but still all amateur) wine drinkers all put Red …

Dark red with considerable sediment. Deep, Sweet cherry nose with a light seasoning of oak. Sweetness and concentration of punchy cherry fruit is impressive. Not much development to date, the tannin is smooth and the acid is enough. This is gulpable now. Perhaps 5 years ahead of it?

Little sediment. Dark purple in the glass. Spicy nose with oakiness behind it. Overall well balanced with a bit of acidity on the longish finish. Definitely drinking close to its peak.

Beautiful full nose of dark fruit, toast and vanilla. Too much oak on the palate but otherwise decent balance for a steak meal.
