This bottle is great. I had a real problem with the Michel 2008 Vaulorent and premox, so I decided I had better pull another one of these. All good - light medium gold color, rich and chalky Chablis flavors with just a hint of honey. White flowers. All correct and lovely.

Good showing. Chris notices that the color suggests a bit of age. Clean palate, white and clear fruit, hint of fennel, the sides are round and not as chiseled as a young Chablis, this is long in the mouth and smooth and round on the sides. No oak, no flab, nice definition. Very clean. Drink now to mid, as there is little point to aging this further. With Chris Y.

Nice showing, right in the zone. Opens to clear and white fruit, very clean, big hit of minerality and stones, dash of white pepper this time. Textbook Louis Michel lack of oak, nice energy and vibrancy, long finish. No degradation overnight, on the second night the wooliness - also textbook Louis Michel - emerges. Drinking very well right now.

Interesting to compare this non-VV to the '08 L. Michel Butteaux VV that I opened the prior night (at Greg's Barale Barolo tasting at Maialino). Not as much grapefruit pith and fennel notes here. Good Chablis, but not great. Opens to orchard fruits with some citrus and an interesting fennel note. Typical Louis Michel qualities of purity, transparency, and no oak, but somewhat soft on the sides (rounder with a few years of age? A reflection of Butteaux as a warmer site?), with plenty of acidity and good energy within, but it's just that the sides seem rounder and softer and this is not the brisk, cut model of Chablis, and shows more softness …

On the first night, grapefruit on the entry, then transitioning into a musky/Asian fruit (durian?), along with orange blossom and pastry notes. We opened this late, close to midnight, so just had a sip. It was reductive at first, with sulfur obscuring the nose, and the palate very lean and dry, but with bright zesty acidity. I go back to the 1970's with Chablis - the 1976's and 1978's remain vivid. The 1986's were up there as well. The fatter vintages - say 1989, I'ld rather forget about. Nose is a bit reticent... some lemon zest. Light bodied with medium+ acidity. This is all about the minerality and acidity... it brings to mind cool white stones, seashells and a healthy squeeze of lemon juice. I love this wine's focus and precision. But if you like your Chablis less tightly coiled, give this a decant or a few years in the cellar.

I have enjoyed a # of the 08 Butteaux VV but not this regular version, until now. In hindsight, I should have drank this one side by side with the VV but I did not have enough drinkers to do that.
